Maura H. Harrison · Two Duties Told

Last Sunday was Passion Sunday, the time for veiling our statues and crucifixes. Why? Perhaps it is an invitation to look directly at our deaths; to put ourselves in the tomb…to deny ourselves the visual consolations of our suffering Lord. It is an invitation to feel the anticipation of the coming of our most intimate friend—Jesus—the one who’ll bring us back to life.

Like Lazarus, we're in the tomb, deprived
of earthly sense, waiting to be revived.

And now, on this Sunday, Palm Sunday, we start our holy week, our holy contemplation. This Sunday starts with celebration and ends with denial: our freely given cloaks and branches degrade to cowardly denials. Help us love you, Lord!

With cloaks and branches—blessed be; fronds strewn
Along the way. With folds—crosses palm-hewn.
