Defending Patriotism: A Response to Governor Moore

One thing you can always count on with Wes Moore: he’ll gladly accuse you of doing exactly what he’s already doing.

Consider what he said recently during his counter-programming July 4th speech:

“Patriotism is not selfish. It is selfless. But today there are those who will use patriotism to justify pulling books from schools and rewriting history until it comforts those in power. That’s not patriotism. That’s nationalism. Patriotism asks you to fight for values and ideals. Nationalism asks you to fight for a person or a group.” ~Gov. Wes Moore

Let that sink in for a moment.

In Moore’s world, if you’re a parent concerned about explicit material in your child’s school library, you’re a nationalist. If you question the revisionist history framework of the 1619 Project and advocate for accurate, honest history, you’re not a patriot. You’re a nationalist. It’s a neat rhetorical trick: reframe the terms, and suddenly anyone who disagrees with you is the villain.

But here’s where it gets rich.

Moore declares that nationalism is about fighting for “a person or a group.” Yet no one in Maryland politics does more to carve Marylanders into competing identity groups than Wes Moore himself. Just weeks ago, he launched a task force specifically to benefit migrants. He champions DEI initiatives, calling them “tools of opportunity.” But let’s be honest: these are identity-based quota systems that sort people by race rather than merit.

So, which is it, Governor?

The founding document of this nation couldn’t be clearer. The Declaration of Independence states: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”

That’s individual equality under natural law. Not group-based equity. Not demographic outcomes engineered by government task forces. No special preferences are given based on race, immigration status, or identity. Just the radical, timeless idea that every individual stands equal before God and the law.

The new Democratic socialists’ policies Moore supports don’t reflect that ideal. They contradict it. And now, to add insult to injury, he wants to redefine patriotism so that defending America’s founding principles somehow makes you a nationalist.

True patriotism doesn’t divide us into groups and pit us against one another. It unites us around the principles that built the greatest nation in human history. The real question Marylanders should be asking isn’t whether Moore is a patriot. It’s whether he even believes in the founding ideals he so confidently rebukes.
