Plex Client on RPi w/ Flirc IR & Composite for CRT in 2023

Recently I decided to get a Plex client going on my CRT Sony television for the full retro experience using the original remote control, which meant I had to do some research and figure out exactly how all this would work in 2023, 20 years after it wasn’t very common. You’ll need a few things to get started, below are some affiliate links to Amazon Canada, and Amazon USA to source some…

My poor mans pork bulgogi recipe

If you’re like me, you love korean food. The flavours, the spice, and usually pretty healthy. The other night I decided to try and make a quasi-beef-bulgogi using pork chops with the ingredients I happened to have on hand and it turned out pretty great. I’ve never actually had pork bulgogi, but the Internet tells me it’s a thing so I ran with it. I thought I’d document it…

Setting up yt_dlp w/ Qnap & Plex for Youtube Download

I’ve been wanting to get some youtube series onto my plex server for a while for archival purposes, and, cause, fuck ads amirite? I pieced together some various scripts I found to mostly automate the process on my QNAP nas, that also houses my Plex server. Most of everything I found was for youtube-dl which doesn’t appear to work as well as the fork yt-dl so I opted to use that for…

Pwnagotchi on a Raspberry Pi 3 with Adafruit 3.5 LCD

The other day I stumbled across Pwnagotchi and had to give it a try. I didn’t have a Pi Zero WH but, I did have a Pi3 with 3.5" LCD, so I wanted to see if I could get it all working as a test platform before trying to find the PIZero. This isn’t really supported, but it does seem to work for testing purposes anyway so I thought I’d put this up for anyone else who wants to try.

UPDATED GOES removal script for Linux

Recently I made this tutorial on receiving GOES images, and I had previously posted a little script for keeping everything clean. It’s now been updated slightly for new paths according to the howto I created. Not very complicated. Use local HTML on new tab in Firefox on ArchLinux in 2022

Recently I set out to customize my Firefox a little bit. I found this awesome Start Page thanks to /r/startpages which you can download here. Upon setting it up, and customizing it I realized the old method of userChrome.js doesn’t seem to work anymore for opening a local HTML file in a new tab. Annoying. After a little research, I’ve figured it out and documented it for anyone else…

How to backup your Ubiquiti NVR/CloudKey+ Protect videos remotely to Backblaze B2

Sadly, Ubiquiti offers no way to backup the videos stored on their NVR and Cloudkey appliances. This sucks if you have a fire, or breakin, and the device is stolen or otherwise compromised. Checking various reddit and ubiquiti community posts, it doesn’t look like a proper solution is coming either (been asked for for years!) So, I decided to try and fix this issue myself. Note this takes a…

Automating the deletion of GOES-16 and GOES-17 images received using GOESTools the ghetto way.

I was having trouble with my hard drive filling up while pulling images from GOES-16 and GOES-17 satellites. 32gb filles up really quick on my odroid! So I wrote a ghetto little script that removes files older than 2 days, every day, except for the full color/ full disk images which are the ones I want to keep. I also leave the national weather service images since they take up very little space.

Setting up a Matrix server for Secure Encrypted Communications through almost all the channels you and your friends use.

With all the privacy issues these days I decided to check out alternatives to using standard services. With that I found Matrix which allows for a secure ‘slack like’ service that also has ‘bridges’ that let you connect to iMessage, Slack, Signal, Facebook even Twitter and Instagram. I have not fully configured this, this is mainly for my records purposes and I stole most…

Setting up SDRPlay RSPDX on Armbian running on an ODroid N2+ for network radio tuning.

Today I received my SDRPlay RSPDx device and decided to get it running on my remote radio server. I’m still not sure if I’ll run this remote or locally, but, wanted to have the option for whatever I do decide to do. The setup is pretty painless and involves a few commands. I’m going to assume you already have your Armbian server setup and can SSH to it and have a special user…

How to setup a Chromium Kiosk Startup Mode for Raspberry Pi running Raspbian Server in 2021

I was tasked with creating a simple dashboard for a client of ours that auto runs on boot of the computer. This weekend I sat down to work on this and here’s what I found. First, make sure you go with Rasbian Server edition of the OS. I tried with various other flavours and it was a convoluted process to remove GDM or install LXDE and actually have this run with minimal effort.

How to setup remote website deployment using git the proper way

Years ago I set this up with a bunch of convoluted scripts, and etc. No fun. First, connect to your remote web server ssh youruser@yourserver.com Note, we make some assumptions that you host your site in…

Compiling (downgrading to) gnuradio 3.7.x on Ubuntu 20.x

Ubuntu 20.x comes with GnuRadio 3.8 which is based on python 3, and, the latest and greatest. However, sometimes you may need to install the older version of gnuradio instead of the latest 3.8 release. Here are my notes on doing just that First, you have to install python2 and pip sudo add-apt-repository universe sudo apt update sudo apt install python2 curl https://bootstrap.pypa.io/get-pip.py…

Making wxtoimg work on your 64 bit arm Odroid N2+

Recently I’ve gotten into RTL-SDR / HAM Radio and have been working on getting this cool package of scripts working that’ll automatically grab NOAA / ISS and METEOR data and decode it! Ran into an issue today with wxtoimg. Since it’s abandonware it’s not possible to compile it, and the only binaries are for 32bit arm, not 64bit, which is what my Odroid N2+ is. Here’s…

Using two ODROID HC2’s to create a small NAS with GLUSTERFS for PLEX server

My Mac Mini acting as a PLEX server was from late 2009 and had began stuttering when playing some recent high quality rips or transcoding. It was time to upgrade. Luckily I had an old i7-4790K processor laying around. I bought a case from amazon, and sourced a cheap 1150 motherboard locally. I also already had a 250gb SSD I wasn’t using. All I needed was some ram and I was in business.

Radeon RX 580 on Hackintosh OSX 10.13.4 Automatically Rotate Screen on Boot

Recently I got an ASUS Radeon RX 580 to replace an NVidia Card I was tired of fighting and trying to make work properly. As it turns out, no video card is very easy to get working with Hackintosh! Anyway, today the problem was after finally getting two monitors working the secondary monitor was booting with a weird rotation and was a pain in the ass to change each time I logged in because the…

Making a cheap bookshelf using milk-crates

A couple weekends ago, my girlfriend and myself came up with the idea to make custom bookshelf using milk-crates. We didn’t actually have any milk crates, so we had to scour sites like Kijiji and Craigslist to find people in our area giving them away, or selling them cheaply. We also aquired some from a small corner store we visit frequently, first for free, then having to pay small amounts…

SED lines to remove Bold customer pricing app from Shopify Theme

The Bold Customer Pricing app for Shopify is a little complex to remove. You can follow the installation instructions in reverse for removal but you’ll probably also need these lines below to quickly find and replace the lines it has modified in your theme. The other edits can’t really be automated with ease as each theme is different, but, these should remain the same. If you’re…

How to update your Nexus 5x running on stock rom, TWRP with ElementalX, Magisk and PHH Superuser.

This is mainly for my own records so I don’t have to go searching again, but maybe it will help someone else. Here’s the steps to update your phone with the latest security updates or bootloader or radio if you’re already running magisk and phh. Grab the…

Setting up a Hackintosh Notes and Tips

This is mainly for my archival purposes, but maybe it’ll help someone else. Howto: Ricing Mac OS-X with Zsh, Iterm2 Borderless + Padding, TMux and KWM

This past weekend I saw over on /r/unixporn that ricing Mac OSX is a ’thing’. I used to have a lot of fun doing this on my old linux systems when I was a kid, like Enlightenment, Afterstep, Windowmaker, XFCE, and anything else I could customize to look like something from a cool ‘hacker movie’ or something like that. Anyway, this got me inspired to change my desktop into…

Adding Google Number w/ Adwords tracking to OptimizePress WordPress Theme

Recently I was tasked with adding number tracking w/ Adwords to a client’s website. They are using OptimizePress which isn’t very friendly for any user editing (no child themes, very confusing theme layout for modifications etc). Anyway, I figured it out and thought others might need to know this, if nothing else, at least on how to edit the body tag to include an onload(); function 🙂…

Compiling Mod_Geoip2 for use with EasyApache 4 (EA4) and cPanel via command line (CLI)

We’ve recently switched to using Easy Apache 4 (EA4) on our cPanel installs as it’s ‘basically not beta’ now. And we ran into a problem where a site needed to have GeoIP installed but it wasn’t available to us through the WHM control panel. After some extensive searching and trial and error, we were able to come up with instructions that worked for our particular…

Compiling Hyperion for Phillips Hue support on Mac OSX

I’ve been looking at the Lightberry for a little while now and have been thinking about how I’ll be implementing it once I actyually buy it and add it to my setup. The Lightberry is pretty cool, it works with a Raspberri Pi and a bunch of video grabbing / repeating so you can get lights behind your television that look like those really expensive TV’s for about 1/10th of the…

Keto Friendly Spicy Saussage Stuffed Yellow Pepper with 2 Cheeses

Woocommerce and W3 Total Cache and APC

If you’re like me and have Apache (or, possibly Nginx) running with PHP5-FPM and Woocommerce you might want to go a step beyond and setup W3 Cache as well. This is great, but up until now there’s been some issues with it which seem to have all been fixed, but I’m putting it in here so I can refer to it later and who knows it may help someone else since these were buried in…
