Instead of approaching every image purely through the tools of color grading, I’ve been asking myself a simple question: what if this image wasn’t digital at all?
What if the color existed in a physical form?
If the scene were carved in stone, how would the color appear? Would it sit softly on the surface like pastel, or would the material itself carry the tone? Would the shadows feel heavier, the highlights more permanent?
Sometimes I imagine the image as light passing through stained glass instead. In that case the color isn’t applied to the surface — it lives inside the light itself.
Thinking this way shifts how I approach the image. It reminds me that color isn’t just something we adjust with software. It’s something that can be imagined through material, texture, and light.
And occasionally, that change in perspective helps me try something different.
