For many years I’ve watched students struggle with music for the same reason.
Not because they lacked talent.
Not because they weren’t intelligent.
Not because they weren’t willing to practise.
They struggled because they were trying to memorise music before they understood it.
Imagine trying to learn a language by memorising thousands of words without understanding how the language itself works.
That’s how music is often taught.
Scales.
Chords.
Theory.
Rules.
Exceptions to the rules.
More rules.
Eventually many people begin to believe that music is something complicated that only certain people can truly understand.
I don’t believe that.
Over the past three decades of teaching, performing, composing, and working with musicians of all ages, I’ve become increasingly convinced that music is built upon a surprisingly small number of patterns.
Once those patterns become visible, music starts to feel less like a puzzle and more like a language.
A language you can speak.
A language you can hear.
A language you can feel.
That’s why I created The Mat Creedon Easy Key Method.
Rather than focusing on memorisation, the book focuses on helping students recognise the relationships that connect scales, chords, melodies, rhythm, harmony, ear training, improvisation, and songwriting.
My hope is that it helps students move beyond simply playing notes and begin understanding the deeper patterns that make music work.
Recently, my dear friend Joel Green, whom I have shared music with for many years, surprised me by printing and binding a copy of the book.
When he handed it to me, I was genuinely touched.
Like many creative projects, this book began as a collection of ideas, notes, lessons, diagrams, and conversations with students over many years. Seeing it transformed into a physical book reminded me that ideas have a way of taking on a life of their own once they are shared.
It was a beautiful gesture, and one I will always treasure.

📱 EPUB Version
Along with access to the growing collection of lessons, discussions, resources, worksheets, and community conversations taking place inside the school.
If you’ve been curious about learning music, improving your understanding of music theory, learning songs more quickly, developing your ear, or simply connecting more deeply with music, I would love to welcome you.

The destination isn’t perfection.
The destination is understanding.
And perhaps even more importantly, enjoyment.
I hope to see you inside.
