H2 is one of four docking stations (receptors) histamine can bind to once it’s released. These receptors are found on mast cells themselves, meaning histamine can bind back to the same cell that released it.
H2 receptors are found in high numbers in your stomach lining, and in lower but meaningful numbers in your heart, certain immune cells, blood vessels, and specific brain regions.
Where H1 is the generalist and found pretty much everywhere (responsible for the classic allergy symptoms), H2 is more specialized. It’s concentrated in fewer places. And where it shows up, it tends to have a more targeted job than H1’s broad, whole-body alarm response.
