Until recently, our understanding of surfing came mostly from what everyone sees online.

Perfect waves.

Graceful rides.

One thrilling moment after another.

Then we met a surfer who quietly shattered that illusion.

He’s 60 years old. And he has spent a great part of his life in the water.

When we asked him what surfing is really like, he smiled and said something we didn’t expect.

“Surfing,” he told us, “is mostly waiting.”

He explained that you can sit in the ocean for five hours and catch just one good wave.

Five hours!!!

And during all that time, you’re watching the horizon… studying the water… staying ready.

Because the right wave could come at any moment.

And here is the fascinating part.

Even experienced surfers don’t know with certainty which wave will be the right one.

They study it for a second or two.

Then they trust their intuition. They go or they stay.

And when they go…

Sometimes it is a nice wave.

Sometimes it’s not.

But they return and they keep waiting.

That conversation stayed with us because it feels remarkably similar to business and investing.

From the outside, people see the frontstage.

The big win.

The breakthrough deal.

The “overnight success.”

What they don’t see is the backstage.

The preparation.

The many years of quiet work.

The waiting.

So the next time you see a spectacular surfing clip online, remember this:

That one minute of riding the wave probably came after a few hours of waiting for it.

A gentle reminder for all of us…

Don’t compare your backstage to someone else’s frontstage.

Your wave will come.

And when it does, you’ll be ready to ride it.

Love and Wisdom,

Monica and Stefan

P.S. During August, we’ll be sending only 2 messages per week instead of 4 for the “The Space Between the Strings” series—on Monday and Wednesday at 7 a.m. EST.

If you see this message, please reply and let us know what you think about this frequency. Is receiving 2 messages per week a better fit for you, or would you prefer 4 for “The Space Between the Strings”?

Thank you 🙏
