A good day and happy August to you from Scotland, where I am today turning in my master’s thesis and am therefore completely emotionally drained. Never met a finish line I couldn’t weepily stagger across, so wish me luck this last lap.
Speaking of laps, the Commonwealth Games conclude today, and it’s been delightful seeing people from all over the world — or at least what remains of the so-called British empire — in town the past two weeks. The vibe here has been impeccable, with pop-up food stalls and groups of athletes singing outside the Boots. This is the energy I like to experience when I’m buying my medicated ointments for my joint pain. Plus, we’ve had Mop Man.
Not pictured this week: the cart full of bucket hats emblazoned with CUNT and SLUT apparently in celebration of the Calvin Harris gig. I saw them while I was on a FaceTime with my daughter and asked, “Wait, are bucket hats back?” And then I found out that The New Radicals just released their first song in almost 30 years, for that movie that’s like The Purge but for sex, so I GUESS SO, SLUTS. This by the way is authentically exciting to me, the one person in the universe who asked for this. Gregg Alexander, I am still not over you turning down my request for an interview! In 2024!
On to the week.
And finally, the response I like to get when I introduce myself.
