No One Should Have to Choose Between Eating and Staying Alive

This morning I woke up with a thought that no one in a wealthy country should ever have to face.

What happens if I can’t afford to stay alive?

My health insurance premium suddenly jumped from $40 to more than $2,400 a month.

Without insurance, even the discounted medications that keep me mentally stable, prevent strokes, and protect my heart cost $489 every month.

These medications are not optional for me. They keep my bipolar disorder, OCD and clinical depression stable and help protect my heart and brain from serious medical risks. Without them, my health could deteriorate quickly.

This is the reality of healthcare in America right now. And I am far from the only one living it.

Millions of Americans are watching their healthcare costs explode while wages remain the same and safety nets disappear.

No one should have to choose between living and eating.

Yet more and more Americans are being forced into exactly that choice.

Yes, this morning I woke up feeling helpless. But I refuse to stay that way.

Speaking out is one way we fight back.

Sharing our stories is another.

If you would like to help me get through this moment, you can contribute here:

And if donating isn’t possible, sharing this article helps more than you might realize.

Because every time someone speaks honestly about what healthcare costs in this country, it becomes harder for the system to pretend everything is fine.

No one should have to choose between living and eating.

Not here. Not anywhere.
