I am a lover of music as I am sure you are too. I'm also big into philosophy which in a way, forces me to look deeply into things. Marshall House HiFi is my best attempt to merge these in an interesting and provocative way.
What are the makings of a perfect song? How would we know when we hear one? These are questions that I have been asking myself and answering for myself in somewhat of a looping dialogue for some years now. Although I am not willing to say that I have it completely figured out… I am ready to put my thesis forward; stand on it so to speak.
I can’t help but see my life in story form. When I look back and try to interpret it in reverse, it makes alot more sense to me than when I was living it (wondering if it will always be that way).
Total silence in your listening room… followed by a sudden crackling sound coming from the Rogue Stereo 100 amplifier as you push down on the big front panel button to power it and to warm it up. Taking a seat and reclining back in your Annaldo chair, you stare at the glow of the tubes for a second, or two, or three… long enough to forget what you were doing - oh the TV remote, that’s right.
Great music should be a space and time machine (a spacetime machine)… Maybe to a previous you… Maybe to a future you… Or… Maybe just to a different present version of you that wasn’t there before the song/album came on. This different present you, now remembering the previous you realizes that they are heading home. She’s there. She’s waiting for you and you can keep that same energy.
And then, just when you are considering quitting whatever social media will be in… lets call it 2033; the cool is poised to enter the arena. Note: The big players are being drafted now; putting together early bodies of work that it took their predecessors a few tries to work up to.
So I say again; in my best Dave Chappelle voice: Where the f*#! is Vilip?! If he did not hit the mega millions, why isn’t he explaining what makes the Shindo preamp such an esoteric piece? What about his take on musical speakers vs. analytical… where do we strike the right balance between those two? What does he think about Jay’s CSS Audio Typhon’s? That last one; I might pay to hear!! I digress.
Yussef… Toro Y Moi… Surprise Chef… all bands I’ve seen live this year; killing it, right there, in my listening room. I wish I could recreate the E11even experience on command in my living room; 50 gold g-string strippers holding bottles of Dom Perignon with sparklers in the top (don’t tell my wife)… but… such is life.
