Next weekend sees the long-awaited — and long-delayed — return of director David Robert Mitchell to the big screen with The End of Oak Street. (I see it tomorrow night and will have a lot to say once I do.)
It’s somehow just the fourth feature for a filmmaker who’s punched above his weight with genre-defying works. 2011’s mellow coming-of-age tale The Myth of the American Sleepover was a favorite of German director Christian Petzold, while 2015’s STD-as-stalker “metaphorror” It Follows was arguably the first shot fired in the “elevated horror” revolution. We’ll see if his forthcoming Spielberg-esque family adventure can transcend the lazy millennial homages to the movies that made their childhood.
Technically, the same could be said of Mitchell’s last film as well, 2019’s Under the Silver Lake (available to rent from various digital platforms). If you somehow missed the release of this movie or only retain the…
