Restricting Mail-In Voting Means We Need To Get To The Polls

It’s Monday and I’m going to admit that I’m a bit cranky. I honestly didn’t have a great summer but I’m also not necessarily ready for fall if that makes any sense. With a little over two months until midterms, I’m starting to feel election uncertainty and anxiety. And Trump and the GOP are doing everything they can to feed that uncertainty and anxiety. The gerrymandering, the chaos around mail-in voting, etc. The Supreme Court’s 6-3 MAGA majority just gave Trump an initial victory in his push to restrict mail-in voting ahead of the election, although it doesn’t decide whether Trump’s actions are ultimately legal. According to NBC News, “At issue are provisions that seek to create a federal list of eligible voters and order the US Postal Service to deliver ballots only to those people.” Terrifying.

In addition, what should have been a summer of celebrating our country’s BIG BIRTHDAY turned into a big bust. Leave it to Trump to mess up our 250th.The stupid State Fair that no one attended and the concert that all decent performers pulled out of when they found out it was a partisan event, the ridiculous cage matches, and just yesterday, the IndyCar race in DC. Or through DC. Honestly, I didn’t really pay much attention to the car races because I don’t give a flying fuck. It’s more taxpayer money spent on something we don’t want or need. And even if it’s not costing as much as let’s say, THE ENDLESS WAR IN IRAN, it’s money Trump shouldn’t be spending. The optics are just so bad. Let’s have car races which wastes gas while our country’s citizens can’t afford to put gas in their cars.

Maybe Trump needs a list of what we’d like him to spend money on. I know he doesn’t care what we think because he’s as much said so, but a comprehensive guide couldn’t hurt.

Things we didn’t want or need:

A billion-dollar ballroom

A helipad

Throwing money away on the Reflecting Pool

Wrestling matches

Car races

Putting tacky gold everywhere

A massive arch

Renaming everything Trump (which will cost double because then we will be removing his name when he’s finally gone)

Vindictive lawsuits and indictments that have no merit

A trillion-dollar Iran war

Endless grifting

Endless golf outings (and security which includes ground to air missile launchers)

A new Air Force One (that isn’t even as safe as the old one)

Electric shock gloves for ICE ($20 million). Seriously.

Here are some things on which we’d like to see our money spent:

Healthcare

FEMA

Food for kids and the elderly

Monitoring foodborne illnesses

Vaccines

Science

Cancer research/clinical trials

Mitigating Climate Change- every ten seconds there’s another extreme weather event

Prosecuting those who raped young girls

This is only a partial guide, but I feel like it would be a good start.

I feel like now that fall is knocking on the door, it’s time to start talking about our voting plans. Especially since we don’t know what will happen with mail-in voting.

Maybe offer to take people to the polls who can’t drive and encourage everyone you know to participate in what’s left of our democracy. In response to my “I’m sorry Canada” post, many Canadians correctly said they don’t want to hear our apologies unless we do something. And that something is to vote. From now until November 3, I’m going to USE THE V WORD OFTEN AND LOUDLY. And I hope you will too.

We can work on that to do list AFTER we regain the House. And the Senate. This is my Substack and I can dream as big as I want to. We impeach the POS and get our country AND our respectability back.

Just typing those words made me a little less cranky.
