Now

Updated on 2024-01-28 Thursday from Tokyo, Japan

Whatever happened to January? Feels like I blinked and missed it.

Here’s how the month looked to date:

Read and enjoyed Robert Louis Steveson’s Treasure Island, part of a digital collection amounting to around nine thousand pages! I might return to it later this year and re-read Kidnapped. I doubt I’ll make time to read all of Mr Stevenson’s work.

Swapped my copy of Oliver Burkeman’s Four Thousand Weeks for William Gibson’s Pattern Recognition. From self-help to sci-fi; seems like a fair trade. (Burkeman’s book is worth reading if you need a gentle tap on the shoulder to “get busy living, or get busy dying” - shout out to The Shawshank Redemption.)

Ordered three paper books about ‘Method Writing’. Two of them are by the method’s originator, Jack Grapes. The other one is by his student, Lisa Segal. Method Writing requires a post (or two) to do it justice. In the meantime, mark me down as impressed.

Last month I mentioned leaving a Web2 social media app, Mastodon. This month I’ve been experimenting with one of Web3’s ‘sufficently decentralized’ social media apps, Warpcast. I’m a novice there and not really sure what’s going on, but the future of digital publishing (‘onchain’, in particular) interests me enough to check it out. You can find me at: warpcast-dot-com (2025-03-16 update. I left Warpcast this week.)

That’s it for this month.

The next NOW update will be published on 28 February, 2024.

Be well, and be happy.
