On April 8 (2026), the Norwegian Journalism Union was so kind to invite me to present my research for the Well-Being and Creative Careers book at their Oslo gathering. Sharing the video of that talk here, it is a short (20 minute) overview of key findings and suggestions for the way forward.

In short, these kind of presentations (link to sample slideshow on Slideshare) focus on the following four overall takeaways from the book and the (ongoing) research:

  • There is a well-being crisis among media professionals worldwide, and it is structural (rather than individual; it is a feature, not a bug);

  • The causes: a lack of reciprocity between effort and reward at work; experiences with organisational injustice in decision-making, and unusually demanding work combined with little or no autonomy (over what kind of work and how the work gets done);

  • Possible solutions: investment in emotional literacy, (more) collective organisation, destigmatisation of the conversation about (mental and physical) health and well-being, and further professionalisation of (empathic) management and leadership.

Overall: love for the profession is wonderful, but if that love is not mutual, things can go wrong quite quickly, and predictably so.
