The Government has confirmed that Barnsley Hospital NHS Foundation Trust will be receiving a new same-day emergency care service. This means specialists will be able to assess, diagnose and treat patients on the same day of arrival who would otherwise have been admitted to hospital.
This will provide Barnsley Hospital with a significant increase in frontline capacity, and ease pressures on A&E departments to reduce waiting times - ensuring patients are treated in the right setting.
This new service is on top of the recent opening of the Alhambra Health Outpatient on the High Street service, as well as the fantastic Glassworks, bringing healthcare closer to our communities for constituents across Penistone and Stocksbridge.
These changes are getting our NHS back on its feet - waiting lists have fallen to their lowest level since 2023, A&E waiting times are at their shortest in four years and ambulance response times are the fastest they have been in half a decade.

The government’s Pride in Place Programme is giving hundreds of areas across the UK up to £20 million of funding each to support them over the next 10 years to make long-term improvements that residents want.

It was great to hear the perspective on topics like health, transport, crime, and the cost of living from people living and working locally. We’ve got the start of a solid set of opportunities for the local area, from how we can support local GP surgeries to get call times down and improving connections to key public services through a ‘hopper’ bus, to improving the quality of the spaces and equipment available at Mortomley Park.
I’ll be taking away all the views shared – along with feedback received over email and collected on the doorstep – and using this to inform my work across the constituency and in Parliament, working with our excellent council candidate for West Ecclesfield, Alex Parker.

I’m committed to bringing back the SL1 and improving our rural bus services. Earlier this week I met Simon Lightwood MP, the Minister for Buses, to discuss how we can improve services in rural communities like ours.
Since being elected, I’ve made better buses one of my top priorities. I’ve held community meetings in Cawthorne and Stocksbridge, launched a campaign on restorting the SL1 and amending the timetables at Silkstone Common Station to better join up with the trains, and helped restore the Hopper bus services in Stocksbridge, Deepcar and Bolsterstone.
South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority Mayor Oliver Coppard is gearing up to roll out bus franchising across South Yorkshire from September 2027, putting buses back in public hands.
The initial improvements to the bus network will focus on making buses reliable, introducing simpler timetables that are easy to read and plan around, better evening and weekend services, and making it easier to travel to the essential public services, work, and leisure spots.
I know that these are the changes that people across our communities want, and I’m determined to deliver them.
I’m very pleased to hear that the Official Received has confirmed that a period of exclusivity has been agreed with a preferred bidder for SSUK, marking the next stage of a future sale agreement. This is a landmark moment for the future of Stocksbridge Speciality Steels and our steel communities.
I want to see our site restart as soon as possible, and I know the Steel Minister shares this ambition for Stocksbridge too. I also know that employees and their families have endured a long period of uncertainty, and want to get back to sustained work as soon as possible. The Official Receiver has confirmed that employees have been informed about this development, and have provided assurance that they want to complete the sale at the earliest opportunity.
I’ve campaigned for the future of our steel plant since day one and so it’s fantastic to see this development announced today, moving us one step closer to a bright, long-term future for steelmaking in Stocksbridge.
I am so ambitious about our Stocksbridge steel site. At its peak, Stocksbridge Speciality Steels produced 15% of global aerospace and defence steel. I know the incredible capacity our site and local workers have, and I want our Stocksbridge site to reach its potential once again.
Next Tuesday 5th May, I’ll be hosting a roundtable in Stocksbridge for steelworkers to hear from you about what you would like me to raise with the potential buyers and with the Government.

Thank you to those constituents who attended my online SEND consultation roundtable. I really appreciated the time to join me and share thoughts and feed ack on the Government’s plans to ensure children with SEND are no longer sidelined, but included, and how we ensure every child is able to achieve and thrive.
Over the course of the evening, we identified over a dozen recommendations that I will be presenting to Government as part of the consultation. From the ratio, training, and quality assurance of TAs, SENDCos and other educational professionals and ensuring clear, joined up communication with parents that is inclusive of young people with SEND at the heart of the decisions, to ‘Peer-to-Peer Parent Engagement Sessions’ to help parents made decisions about the right educational settings for their children, there were some brilliant ideas put forward by knowledgeable parents in our communities.
Following the roundtable, I’ll be writing to Ministers at the Department for Education to ensure your views are at the heart of change, building on my previous work and engagement events on SEND with parents and local schools.
