It’s 7:00 am and I’m standing over my espresso machine, running through the mental list of minor adjustments I still need to make before the website goes live tomorrow. Eight months of ideation, a few wrong turns, connecting with a designer who actually understood what I was trying to do, and more hours working on this than I want to count. I’m itching to stop building it and start living in it.
Thanks for reading An Acquired Taste! This post is public so feel free to share it.
Nobody tells you that building something of your own happens inside a life that keeps moving. The business keeps running. The leads keep coming in. In the time I’ve been working on this I’ve lost my soul dog to heart failure and my other elderly gentleman, Sammy, was just diagnosed with lung cancer. I’ve celebrated birthdays and traveled to places I’ve never been before. I didn’t get to hit pause on life to build this. I built it inside all of it.
The week the website launched I was in Charlotte, working a client’s wedding. In the buildup to the event I had been deep in the final stretch of the rebrand. It was the kind of week where everything feels simultaneously unfinished and inevitable. The site wasn’t live yet. The new direction wasn’t public. None of that mattered, because I was already living it.
When the client trusts me completely, something opens up. I was able to lean into my process, move through the weekend the way I actually prefer to work, and capture the real energy of the room. Nobody there knew what was about to go live, but I knew and there was something clarifying about that. Doing the work at the exact level I’d been building toward, before anyone could see what I was building. The vision was already true before it was public. The launch didn’t create anything new. It just made visible what was already happening.
That’s what this season has actually felt like from the inside. It isn’t a performance of becoming but rather the real thing, quietly underway.
The morning after the launch was quieter than I expected. Relieving. Validating. Eight months of carrying something mostly invisible and then, almost without ceremony, it was just out there. The work continued. The emails came in. Life kept moving the way it always does.
The Charlotte weekend taught me something about this season. The confirmation comes before the recognition. I wasn’t waiting to become something. I was already that ‘thing’. The launch made it legible to everyone else. That’s what building from the inside out actually feels like. A quiet accumulation of proof that you were right to keep going.
It’s been a few weeks since the site went live. This morning I was back at the espresso machine, running a different list. New inquiries to respond to. A timeline to finalize. The season keeps moving and so do I, because this is just what it looks like to grow something while you’re also living. The work continues and that’s the whole point.
