Healing from Autism and PANS/PANDAS Through Root Cause Medicine

Children and adults diagnosed with autism and/or PANS/PANDAS can recover with proper medical assessment and interventions that address their underlying medical issues. In the following video, MAPS Executive Director Honey Rinicella relays the story of one of many children previously diagnosed with autism who was successfully treated by Dr. Anju Usman Singh.

As Honey says in her video, we need thousands of doctors like Dr. Anju Usman Singh. Although Dr. Usman Singh has recently retired from private practice, she is in no way finished with this mission. As a Board Member of MAPS, Dr. Anju is active in training the next group of medical professionals providing proper assessment and treatment of children (and adults) with complex medical conditions.

MAPS is primarily an organization that works to recruit and train clinicians (MD, DO, Naturopathic Physicians, Homeopaths, Chiropractors, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians Assistants and Therapists). At the bi-annual MAPS Clinician Conference, hundreds of dedicated clinicians learn about cutting-edge research and clinical applications they can take back to their communities and patients.

About a week ago, I asked my Facebook Friends who are parents of children diagnosed with autism and/or PANS/PANDAS to tell me about their experiences. This was my ask:

MAPS stands for Medical Academy of Pediatrics and Special Needs. MAPS grew out of the DAN! movement, which began with a group of physicians and scientists working together to discover what underlying root causes were contributing to autism and other neuro-immune disorders in children. MAPS has taken what DAN! started and continued to run with it. We know what works. What we need now are more clinicians to learn and apply that knowledge to helping their patients.

PARENTS: 2026 marks the beginning of a new era. In March of 2026, MAPS held its first ever Parent Conference and we’re doing it again in September, with options for in-person and virtual attendance for those who cannot make it to Philadelphia. The Parent Conference is held separately from the Clinician Conference and is a time for parents to learn from MAPS Clinicians about underlying medical issues and treatments to successfully address those root causes.

For parents of medically fragile and complex children, navigating the information and figuring out what to do and where to start can be overwhelming. Attending the MAPS Parent Conference can be an excellent first step if you’re just getting started.
