You can run a marathon after 40. That’s not motivational filler — it’s a physiological fact. The masters runners who flame out aren’t victims of age; they’re victims of a training plan written for a 28-year-old that they refused to modify. Adjust the inputs and the outcome holds.

But adjustments are required. Your cardiovascular engine still responds to aerobic training. Your VO2 max still improves. Your legs will still carry you 26.2 miles. What changes is the rate at which your body rebuilds between sessions — and if you don’t account for that, the plan that works for younger runners will gradually grind you down.

The last weekend of July delivered one of the year’s most varied stretches of marathon racing: a 7,000-person road spectacle threading through San Francisco’s hills, a handful of altitude-battered trail efforts in the mountain West, and a brace of small-town events that reminded you why runners travel for this.
