I posted this note a while ago and I felt the need to compile and share some of my favorite radio stations. Music discovery and keeping music culture alive in the age of its TikTok-ification—where algorithms are the ones who make the choice of what you should be listening to—can be as simple as tuning in to free indie radio shows. Diving into this world has TRULY transformed the way I connect with music and expanded the boundaries of my comfort zones. I hope you get to experience this as well <3

these are the ones that I’ve been essentially playing non-stop throughout this month. i LOVE every single one of the stations in this list, but these are the ones I have found myself gravitating toward lately <3

Windows music visualizer nostalgia

This is exactly why I will never go fully analog. There’s magic in the digital, in community, in accessibility, and in range. This station is so diverse, I never know what to expect from them and that’s what keeps me on my toes. Needless to say the cool little features and the visualizer are out of this world.

I’ve found that engaging with music on a multi-sensorial level, where it goes beyond just background noise or an exclusively sonic experience can be a transformational experience. Some days, when I feel my head going too fast, I just put on this station and look at the visualizer to immerse myself in a moment that feels meaningful, one that quiets the noise in my head.

The mix between visuals, sound, and user experience is so pleasing and perfect for lounging on a Summer day. I personally do not experience Summer here in Bogotá, but when I play this station I can pretend I do lmao.

I was initially drawn to this station because their web design is out of this world. At this time, I wasn’t too familiar with the world of online radio and this station was a wonderful introduction to it. They have an array of shows that range in genres and concepts, so I would say there’s something here for everyone, but my favorites tend to be ambient, indie, and electronic based shows.

I believe I found this during my initial digital dérive exercise, which I documented for IOD. It has become one of my absolute favorites, and as a plus, the rotating visuals, the 24/7 channels by mood, and the community aspect, make it truly special. I also love it for whenever I’m having decision fatigue since I already know what I can expect from each channel :)

This station was mentioned to me by Matt, an IOD subscriber and supporter, when I asked about his current projects. He has his own show here and after listening to both the station and a couple of episodes of his show, Mostly Listening, I knew I had to share with you as well! Here’s a bit more about it in Matt’s own words:

It started off as a way for Adam, the founder, to share music with his friends, who are spread around quite internationally. But it’s also building a footprint in Leyton, the area of East London where Adam and I both live (and that’s how I discovered it). So it’s very interesting how the idea of “community radio” can work for different types of community - both social/friendship communities and geographic communities (of course there’s a lot of overlap too).

NTS is probably one of the largest and most comprehensive stations when it comes to range, reach, and genre diversity. This is a place where I know I can go back to the comfort of my favorite shows and hosts, or go in the complete opposite direction and truly learn about something new. This is probably where I would start if I had zero clue about radio, or even what I’m looking for—their staff picks, curation, and navigability make it easy for you.
