Controversy, and ignoring some good advice...

Well folks, you’ve probably seen early in the year I was a bit unsure of what the future held for me here at Admirals, so in a sort of ‘last ditch’ effort, I made some changes. Part of that, was to try and learn a bit more about what I do for a living (that’s social media mainly, but obviously there’s now substack… and I’ve my book, and I work with some other businesses helping them with their social media etc.).

This involved me going to some talks, doing some workshop type things and also doing a lot of my own reading. Obviously stumbled into doing this (as most do - or certainly most that have been doing it 10 years given it wasn’t really much of a ‘thing’ when I started. I’m fairly sure now ‘influencer’ is now a chosen career path and I bet you can likely do a degree in it!), and I’m very grateful it’s ticked along nicely, and some of the skills I learnt in my previous career have thankfully been relevant…

But, I am a bit old fashioned, and can be a bit belligerent about change, and will happily moan to anyone that will listen about Insta’s change to video over photos haha - even though I’ve more to be grateful for than most for Insta - but a post that used to take maybe 2 hours to do… to take a nice photo and write what I hoped would be an interesting caption, now can take 3 days of shooting video content, editing, working out the audio and music and maybe recording a voiceover too!

But, I thought understanding things a bit better, from some real experts in this field would be a useful thing… and to be clear, they undoubtedly are experts, know their onions, and what they told me was absolutely true… but at the same time, I was slightly horrified, and will absolutely be ignoring the vast majority of their expertise, even though I know ultimately it’ll compromise my success… and here’s why…
