It’s easy to get bogged down under the sheer enormity of America’s morass of regulations that are strangling our productive industries. The staggering number of regulations—nearly 300,000 of them, according to the 2023 NAM study by Nicole and Mark Crain that I’m so fond of— can make it difficult to point out specific examples to people to illustrate just how red tape chokes out U.S. industrial productivity.

That makes me immensely grateful to my LinkedIn pal Sara Rosinsky for sending me the link to this Reason article about how red tape has demolished the American elevator industry.

It’s pretty much got it all when it comes to how the broad swath of regulations combines to destroy a manufacturing segment, including onerous safety and design regulations, production requirements, building codes, and labor union depredations.
