Industrial Policy: Why on Earth Would We Think More Government Involvement Would Help?

The calls for instituting a far more active industrial policy in American continue to grow.

But as I mentioned to my guest, the brilliant Julia Cartwright of the AIER, during this past week’s episode of my Manufacturing Talks Web Show and Podcast, I struggle to understand how people can possibly believe that would be a good thing.

The example I threw out was health care. Our federal government is now heavily involved, particularly since the imposition of Obamacare on the country, in dictating what our health care “market” can and can’t do, and it absolutely picks winners and losers in that business.

The results have been disastrous.

The cost of health “insurance” has skyrocketed since the Obamacare travesty. You now pay roughly twice as much on average for coverage for plans deductibles many times what they were before the Orwellian “Affordable Care Act” was passed.

The care you get, meanwhile, has been torpedoed by idiotic requirements like Electronic Medical Records. They’re the reason your doctor no longer pays any attention to you, but is instead completely consumed with typing on his computer during your entire visit.

Doctors have taken it in the shorts too. The law forced many of them to sell their independent practices to medical corporations or private equity firms, which also devastated the quality of the care you get.
