Hope Bartimioli Thal (H.B. Thal) is a Los Angeles-based composer, songwriter, and vocalist. Her most recent work includes the score to, “Plan C,” from the lauded 2022 horror film anthology Give Me an A and the lead composer 2023 American Girl Doll animated series from Mattel, “Kavi: Girl of the Year”. She is a composer & orchestrator for Joy Music House, to which she is credited on critically acclaimed films scores such as, the Oscar-nominated Minari (Emile Mosseri) and The Woman King (Terence Blanchard), as well as the new Hulu series Death and Other Details (Brocker Way). Her songs have been used throughout programs from Mattel & MGA and featured on the CW, ESPN & Netflix. Her scoring work can be heard on Trollstopia, Trolls the Beat Goes On, & the I Heart Arlo Netflix series. She is classically trained and a graduate of the UCLA Film Scoring Program. Her debut singer/songwriter album, Bloom, was released in January 2023 and she has since released a pop EP & in June 2024 a cover of Bruce Springsteens' Dancing in The Dark.
Q&A
For me, being a mom has transformed how I see myself. I felt before my kid that my self esteem can be blown with the winds of the industry. Even when I didn't want it to I couldn't help it. After having my kid I found a confidence and esteem in being a mom and how much more important it was to be there for my child and that he thought highly of me. Weather I have successful days, or experience intense amounts of rejection, he is there to be overjoyed to see me at the end of it all and that foundation has changed me in the best possible way.
I often feel lonely in being a mom and in music. There are so many things that my male colleagues do not understand, even if they are parents. Being freelance and balancing the 'hustle' of it all, while trying to show up for my kid can be quite challenging. Staying in LA without support from family is very daunting at times. I find it all to be very isolating.
My advice would be to focus on building a community that most DEFINITELY includes other moms. To have a ton of grace towards yourself and talk to yourself the way you would talk to someone else going through what you're going through. Celebrate your wins!
