Can a 3 Day Taper Improve Football Performance?

Fixture congestion has become the norm in professional football.

Many teams now face periods where matches are separated by just 72 hours, leaving practitioners with a difficult challenge. How do you maintain performance while managing fatigue with so little time available?

Traditionally, tapering strategies have been associated with longer reductions in training load lasting one or two weeks. However, these approaches are often unrealistic during the competitive season.

A recent study by Fessi and colleagues (2026) investigated whether a simple 3-day step taper could improve performance in professional football players. The findings suggest that even a very short reduction in training volume may produce meaningful benefits.

The study followed 26 professional football players who completed a four-week progressive training block.

Players were then divided into two groups. One group maintained their normal training schedule, while the taper group reduced training duration by 50% across three days while maintaining both training intensity and frequency.
This is an important detail.

The taper was not simply three days of easy training. Intensity remained unchanged. Only volume was reduced.

This mirrors what many practitioners already attempt during congested fixture periods, reducing exposure time while preserving the quality of the work performed.

One of the biggest findings was the improvement in countermovement jump performance.

Following the taper, jump height increased by 5.8%, representing a large effect size. In contrast, the control group actually experienced a 4.7% reduction in jump performance over the same period.


For practitioners, this finding highlights how quickly neuromuscular performance can respond when accumulated fatigue is reduced.

The improvement likely reflects a combination of enhanced recovery, reduced muscle damage and restoration of glycogen stores following the reduction in training volume.

Importantly, the players did not gain fitness during those three days.

Instead, the taper appears to have allowed them to better express the fitness qualities they had already developed during the previous training block.

Repeated sprint ability is one of the most important physical qualities in football.

The taper group improved both their best sprint time and total sprint time following the intervention. Peak sprint time improved by 1.6%, while total repeated sprint time improved by 1.4%.

These improvements may seem small.

However, in elite football, marginal gains matter. Small improvements in repeated sprint ability can influence the number of high-intensity actions a player is capable of producing during a match.

Meanwhile, the control group demonstrated a decline in repeated sprint performance, suggesting that continued exposure to high training loads may have resulted in accumulated fatigue.

Perhaps the most interesting finding was that the performance improvements transferred into football-specific activity.

Following the taper, players covered more total distance, performed more high-speed running, completed more sprint distance and produced substantially more accelerations and decelerations during small-sided games.

Sprint distance increased by 14.3%, while accelerations and decelerations increased by approximately 16%.

At the same time, average heart rate during the games decreased slightly.

This combination suggests players were able to produce greater external outputs with a similar or lower physiological cost.

For coaches and sport scientists, this is perhaps the strongest practical message from the study.

The taper did not simply improve isolated testing outcomes. It appeared to enhance performance during football-specific activities.

A 3-day taper involving a 50% reduction in training duration improved explosive power in professional football players.

Repeated sprint performance improved despite the short duration of the taper.

Football-specific outputs during small-sided games also improved, including sprint distance, accelerations and decelerations.

Training intensity was maintained throughout the taper, only volume was reduced.

During congested fixture periods, reducing volume for a few days may help players express their physical qualities more effectively without compromising preparedness.
