hello there, friend — it is New York Music Month and the city is absolutely vibing. tapioca flash mobs, rooftop sunsets, mapo tofu at midnight, and a dancefloor that never seems to end. we are right in the middle of all of it and we want to bring you in.
FROM THE BAND
New York Music Month has been everything this year. The city has that particular summer charge where every block feels like a possible concert, every rooftop a possible ceremony.
Last week Sarah and I found ourselves in the middle of a tapioca flash mob in Times Square with Jarrod Lawson the kind of spontaneous convergence that only makes sense in New York in June, and that somehow makes complete sense the moment it happens.
The connections have been remarkable. As the sun set over the roof of Citizen M, we found ourselves deep in conversation with artists whose work genuinely moves us the kind of late-afternoon talks where time dissolves and you leave feeling more certain about why you do this. Laughter, ideas, music, the skyline turning gold. Those conversations stay with you.
And then: Spicy Moon on a whim, where we ran into Nik Tyler from Mercy for Animals — one of the most grounded, generous humans in the room.
The mapo tofu was extra spicy. We handled it. Completely worth it. Spicy Moon remains the move.
Almost every weekend this month has involved dancing. Daytime, with the crew, in parks and spaces across the city that particular free-moving afternoon-in-New-York kind of dancing that feels less like an activity and more like a state of being.
This is what seeded Celestial Tide. The house remix album came directly out of these afternoons. We are not exaggerating when we say the city wrote it with us.

This is what the dancefloor teaches. When the music is right and the body is moving and the city is alive around you, we go beyond thought. Attention converges. The soul becomes wholly intent.
the quality of what you create rises in direct proportion to how fully you give yourself to the present moment of creation. The flash mob, the rooftop, the mapo tofu, the studio the next morning, all of it feeds from the same source.

After a Spicy Moon night, we come home craving something bright and satisfying that we actually made ourselves. This is that dish. Crispy tofu cubes in a sticky, tangy orange sauce soy sauce, fresh orange juice and zest, sesame oil, a little heat. Better than any takeout version and ready in under 40 minutes.
