Sometimes the hardest part of making a new video for socials isn’t the filming, the set up, or the editing. Sometimes, it’s figuring out what the engaging hook is going to be at the beginning. The thing that will make a person whose aimlessly scrolling decide within 2 seconds that they want to stay.

A hook just has to create enough curiosity to make someone stop scrolling.

Today, I’m sharing a compilation of 15 hooks that I’ve used (or I have lined up to use) as an artist and writer on social media. And the best thing? A lot of these can be used with B-Roll content by putting the hook as text directly on your video!

  1. “Everyone be nice…” This one immediately invites the watcher to engage with something nice. Show off your recent piece of art, a piece of writing, or something else.

  2. “Which do you like better?” Show multiple options of something. This would be perfect as a carousel or slideshow!

  3. “I need your opinion” Very similar to #2!

  4. “POV: You discovered…” Show something that’s been discovered. A creature in a piece of your art, a fantasy setting in your novel, etc.

  5. “What would you name this?” A perfect hook for any creative niche!

  6. “I wasn’t sure if this would work…” Perfect for showing creative risks.

  7. “This took me longer than I’d like to admit.” Other creatives definitely understand the struggle of something taking awhile to create.

  8. “I almost didn’t share this.” Great for works and progress and finished works.

  9. I made this because…” This is great for storytelling.

  10. “Nobody asked for this but…” Perfect for niche interests and personal experiments.

  11. “The details are my favorite part.” This is one of my favorite hooks (and you can see a lot of variations of it on my Tik Tok). I usually highlight brushstrokes or fun lines.

  12. I’ve been working on something.” Give your viewers a peek behind the scenes! Viewers love to see some of the inner workings of creatives.

  13. “This is your sign to create the thing.” Then show off what you’re working on or recently finished. People love motivation.

  14. “Could you make this?” Okay, maybe this one is a bit controversial. But it can definitely work!

  15. “This is your sign to…” This one is great for compilations. Again, people love to be motivated.

If you use any of these, I’d love to see them! Tag me on socials directly as makasoph. I frequently share tips and tricks for creatives navigating social media while sharing my own art and books.
