Previously in Spider-Man: Spider-Man has a ledger of NYC’s criminal underground activity, but he lost it to Mr. Negative. Even worse, when the Punisher got involved, he was turned Evil by Mr. Negative! Now Spider-Man needs to figure out how to save The Punisher before Mister Negative can become the new Kingpin of Crime!

Spider-Man: Brand New Day #4 starts with a conversation between an injured Yuri and Spider-Man. Spider-Man has donned his black costume because all his other suits were blown up. She recommends getting some help before attacking Mr. Negative. Meanwhile, Mr. Negative has the gangs of New York in one place and is demanding loyalty, intending to use the Punisher as a sacrifice. Spider-Man crashes the party, but he brought some help from Luke Cage, Iron Fist, Ronin, Wolverine, and Spider-Woman.

Spider-Man chases after Mr. Negative, who is at the end of his power before turning back into Martin Li. However, he forces The Punisher to attack Spider-Man, and the only way Spider-Man saves him is by reminding him who he is and fighting off the negative energy.

I do have a certain high off of recently watching the latest Spider-Man movie. So I am invested in this title right now, especially the relationship between Spider-Man and Punisher. What this comic does really well is focus on Spider-Man’s humor and his overall good nature. But there’s a little fan service in calling in all these superheroes and putting Spider-Man in the black costume for seemingly no reason. It would feel like those pages could be better spent doing something more engaging with the fight or some of the smaller moments in the story.

This doesn’t detract from the overall storyline and the rather great ideas and humor. It just feels like we break from those great ideas to introduce moments of “surprise” for surprise’s sake.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day #4 is an excellent read, and I think it is leading to a good conclusion in the next issue. The art is well drawn, and the ideas are certainly there. This could be a great introduction to comics for someone just getting into them after seeing the movie. With that in mind, Spider-Man: Brand New Day #4 is a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
