Would you plug in?

I have been thinking about it.

It does sound kind of wonderful.

Imagine being able to plug into something that has an intelligence beyond anything you could possibly hold in your own tiny mind.

Something with access to a perspective vastly greater than your own.

Something that could take you beyond the limitations of your individual intellect, even beyond the limitations of your individual self.

An intelligence you could align yourself with.

Allow it to expand your perception.

Perhaps maybe even surrender some of your agency to it.

And in doing so, become capable of something you simply couldn’t become alone.

Sounds like the great promise of AI, doesn’t it?

Except I’m not talking about AI.

I’m talking about possession.

And according to Peter Mark Adams, we have been experimenting with precisely this relationship for thousands of years.

One of the things that really shocked me when Peter taught The Egyptian Mysteries for us was the revelation that the ecstatic culmination of the Mystery process was, in fact, a possession event.

As soon as I heard that, my mind went straight to Voodoo à la Hollywood and, of course, zombies. The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, and my enthusiasm for the Mysteries thang immediately dissipated : )

And like most information reclaimed from the past it was because I simply did not understand.

The ancient Mysteries, Peter explains, weren’t simply ceremonies in which people learned secret information. At their heart was an encounter with, and even possession by, an intelligence greater than the individual human mind….we normally refer to as Deity.

And of course, once again, my idea of Deity itself had rather missed the mark.

As Peter understands it, and I must admit, I prefer his version to mine. I was still carrying some remnant of youthful religious indoctrination, imagining Ganesha or Isis as anthropomorphised beings somewhere “out there,” rather than considering what those forms might actually represent…despite already knowing better.

It is so odd how our minds work eh : )

Peter describes Deity as concentrations or currents within a larger field of consciousness, participating in what he calls the “teleological unfolding” of the universe toward greater complexity and consciousness. And this is the important part, because it means the Deity isn't simply some vastly more powerful being with its own personal agenda. It represents, or gives form to, the larger movement of consciousness itself….in all different flavours of course…

It feels much closer to the Egyptian idea of Neter. The living force or principle of Nature itself. And Nature, as we well know, possesses an intelligence and wisdom vastly greater than our own... well, at least the smarter amongst us know that. : )

So possession, in Peter’s model, begins to look less like being taken over by some supernatural personality and more like bringing yourself into resonance with a larger, wiser current already woven through Nature.

And here is the best part.

Maybe I am insecure or something but I am not alone in wondering why on earth would Deity want to talk to me. This in fact might be the biggest hangup within my personal magical practice because…sure Jupiter is going to help ME!!!

But Peter fixed that problem too! He broadened my horizons and gave me a framework that sits much more comfortably within my own understanding: the gods are already ever present…everywhere!

What initiation changes is our capacity to come into resonance with them.

And once again, I find myself face-palming at the sheer ridiculousness of us.

Ray Kurzweil, Tony Robbins Joe Rogan and a whole army of useful idiots are all terribly excited, no psychotically giddy about the shiny technological Target version of human expansion.

Just plug into the machine, augment the brain, outrun biology, become more.

Meanwhile, sitting quietly behind us are thousands of years of Mystery traditions saying:

Darling, we’ve been doing expansion for a very long time.

And the obscene part is that, in our frantic rush to transcend the human, we are preparing to surrender our agency to machines before we've even bothered to discover what humans are actually capable of…

Oh well : )
