Hi all!

Lovely to see you here! Yes, yet again I am in your inbox, or on your screen, but I’m writing in Substack this time. Actually. I’m writing currently in another program and I’m going to paste it into Substack. Why? Because I can hear the noise over there louder than my own keyboard. And the noise brings up all sorts of stories. That I’m not involved enough, I don’t know enough, I’m not doing enough, I should be posting more, I should be including videos, I should be more original… and on and on and on and YAAAAAWWWWWWN. Boring things my brain likes to do on Tuesdays… and Wednesdays and Thurdays and Fridays and Saturdays and Sundays and especially on Mondays. What’s my point? Well, my point is that I’ve been working really hard for over 30 years to quiet the noise in my head, and the thing I’ve learned above all else? That it’s not my job to eradicate it. It is my job to choose where I direct my attention. And something that is cool and that I’m oh so grateful for, I now have many tools to quiet the buzz when it gets loud, my sweet head, and the internet. And I have many ways I work with what I’ve got, on this day, in this moment.

First and foremost I set an intention. You’ve heard me talk about intentions before, I know! And this won’t be the last of it. The most powerful way I know to move through my life is working with intentions, and if you haven’t tried it I really do recommend you play around and then make it an ingrained habit ASAP. So. First and foremost, I set an intention for what I’m doing, I get clear on my why. Why am I writing you? It’s to tell you about something I have worked through. Something I’m listening to and turning around in my being. So if it’s my intention to do that I need to clear anything in my way and not get distracted by the many distractions we have these day, whether they be 3d or digital. I just listened to part of an interview with Jay Duplass, he’s a filmmaker if you haven’t heard of him, I barely have, but he was pointing out that there is always something asking for our attention these days. Online and in person. There’s always someone asking you to pay a bill or file your taxes (now that I live abroad I file in 2 countries, it really does feel constant!) or meet a work deadline or to move the car. And when you’re trying to make things in the world, there is no one demanding that of you, no one is demanding you finish a script. There’s no one telling you you must complete a newsletter, now! Or you’ll be punished! So we must do everything in our power to set up the circumstances so they’re on our side. And to stay intentional about how we want to live our lives, what we want to create.

On a very, very practical level I think about the book Atomic Habits, the author said (something along the lines of) the only difference between ‘successful’ people and people who are not (yes, I know, whatever that means) are different habits. That ‘successful’ people set themselves up for success. They line the path to their typewriter with rose petals, a strong cup of coffee and a disconnected internet router in order to ensure their intentions are met. If we define success as Maya Angelou does, “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it,” then I am on board and noting how I move toward it, how I choose it through my actions and attention.

And, really, this is not about the end goal per se. It’s not about finishing the script or sending the newsletter, not really, when it comes down to it. The most important step in the journey is, it always is, what you choose to do today, really what you choose to do in this moment. That is the only step. The one and only step you can choose. The one where you can exercise your power. The only one you can do differently. And that’s what people want to know, right? How to do things differently than they’ve done them before. You choose something different in this moment. Then you do the same in the next moment, something different, something divorced from the past version of yourself that you are oh so attached to. Over and over again you do this, you practice, you choose differently… with lots of rest in between of course. And at some point you’ll look up and back and notice that one tiny step at a time got you here. And that you surprised yourself and created something beautiful along the way.
