A remote, entry-level marketing job can be a great starting point for a recent college grad who doesn’t have a clue what she wants to do with her life. “Marketing” is such a nebulous career term that it can be manipulated and stretched to signal one’s proficiency at virtually anything. Designing, strategizing, selling, buying, social media, branding, media relations. These micro-skills within the marketing umbrella are similarly vague and pliable. Not to sound like Donald Trump or Mark Cuban or something, but in many cases, a corporate job interview is really just a matter of framing, of crafting your experience into the perfect verbal or written package so that it checks all the boxes for an unimaginative, disinterested corporate hiring manager. The sad reality is that the arbiters of jobs that you don’t really care about, but want to get, are typically people who also don’t care about their jobs, who engage in the bare minimum to get them done. Imagine that.
