Today, June 9th, is officially Dorothy Cotton Day in Ithaca!

The Mayor recently announced that June 9th is now an official city holiday, honoring the legendary civil rights icon right here in her home base of Ithaca. You can watch his full announcement in the video below.

While Dorothy is known nationally for working in Dr. King’s inner circle as the Educational Director of the SCLC, we know her locally as a community anchor, Cornell director, and founder of the Dorothy Cotton Institute.

Her life’s work was about civic education—teaching everyday people that they have the power to change their own communities.
