Today, August 12, 2026, at 17:47 UTC, the Moon’s shadow swept across the Earth — starting at sunrise over an empty stretch of Arctic Russia, crossing Greenland, running over Iceland at maximum eclipse, out over open Atlantic, and finally landing near sunset over northern Spain and the Balearic Islands.
For up to 138 seconds along that path, the sky went dark at midday. The temperature dropped. Colors faded. And the Sun’s corona — its outer atmosphere, invisible on every other day of the year — hung visible in the sky, ringed by a “diamond ring” flash at either end.
It’s the first total solar eclipse mainland Europe has seen since 1999.
The Moon had reached its closest point to Earth (perigee) just two and a half days earlier, which is why this eclipse’s path was unusually wide — nearly 300 km across. Two-thirds of that path ran over ocean, which is why eclipse chasers picked their spots carefully: Greenland’s fjords, Iceland’s volcanic plains, and — for the best odds of clear sky — the plateaus of northern Spain.
This eclipse belongs to Saros cycle 126, a lineage of eclipses repeating on an 18-year rhythm. The next one to touch Europe comes August 2, 2027 — a different path, over Spain, North Africa, and the Middle East.
Same sky. Never the same eclipse twice.
