This week I was walking towards a meeting in Chinatown when I kept spotting the same well dressed mom, teenage son duo on what looked like a self-guided food tour. She was wearing a champagne colored silk midi skirt with a crisp white t-shirt and fresh highlights. They were laughing and sharing their food. I stared probably a little too long while trying to envision, manifest even, that I was looking at my future.
If you know anything about me, you know I am not exactly lost in motherhood. You’ll be hard pressed to find someone who is more in-the-know about what to do in NYC (during the day) than I do. My career is thriving and I get dressed every single day. I have worked so hard to maintain my identity since having my son, and I am very proud of who I am. But now that my son starts school in September, it’s time to start working towards who I want to become.
This isn’t Finding Yourself 101— we’re working on the next level. We’re aiming to be a smarter, hotter, & a more interesting Mom.
A couple of questions to get us started. Let’s take inventory of where we are at.
SMARTER: What can you do to get smarter? What books can you read or magazines should you have subscriptions for? What podcasts do you listen to?
I’m currently reading Love by the Book by Jessica George!
HOTTER: What beauty treatments have you wanted to try? How can you switch up your fitness routine to give you the definition you’re looking for? Are you drinking enough water?
I made an appointment for a lash lift and tint for next week! My first!
INTERESTING: Do you have hobbies other than scrolling on your phone? Have you looked up what fun things are happening where you live this weekend? Are you trying new foods or activities? Maybe you can start creating content?
I saw an incredible performance of La Cage aux Folles at City Center with Wayne Brady and Billy Porter last night. I’d strongly recommend it.
MOM: Are you the kind of mom you want to be?
I haven’t cooked in weeks and I don’t want my son to think I am only capable of using a delivery app to feed my family.
Make all the necessary doctors appointments you’ve been putting off
Using Zocdoc’s “well guide” I made appointments for teeth cleaning, a check up, OBGYN and a dermatologist.
Switch up your workout routine!
I signed up for a couple afternoon classes via Classpass since I am simply not going in the morning.
Add a couple pieces of jewelry to your everyday routine.
I’m always wearing earrings, but a bracelet and a couple of rings scream “has her shit together.”
Mindlessly lift weights while watching Love Island
I used to do this in High School while watching my DVD box set of Gilmore Girls and I was ripped.
Start your best self vision board.
Here’s mine (I do them seasonally.)
I’d LOVE to hear what you’re doing + if you plan to join me!
