The Best Reservation on Cape Cod

With the sun setting earlier than usual, we’ve been trying to get home from the studio as soon as possible to enjoy what’s left of the day. And if you’re girls like us, dinner and a glass of wine are never too far from your mind. Which inevitably leads to the question: where should we go for dinner?

With time (and a little frustration), you’ll quickly learn the answer.

Nowhere.

Angela will attest to this. There is nowhere to go for dinner on Cape Cod in the summer.

Okay, technically there are plenty of places. But once you’ve sat in an hour of traffic, waited for a table, or tried to convince everyone to shower and get dressed after a full day at the beach, you’ll quickly realize that the best reservation on Cape Cod is the one in your own backyard.

Angela has always said that the moment you cross the bridge, you should be able to exhale.

We agree.

And lately, as we’ve been designing 2 Sachem Path, we’ve been thinking a lot about what happens after that exhale.

We can already picture our evenings there: walking home from the beach with salty skin and beach-curled hair. Rinsing off in the outdoor shower and immediately wandering into the kitchen to start washing vegetables for dinner.

Someone starts chopping. Something gets thrown on the grill. A bottle of wine gets opened. If Sam is there, there is probably an Aperol Spritz involved. And slowly, everyone finds their way outside.

Maybe that’s why we’ve become so particular about the way we design summer homes. We’re not only thinking about the tile pattern or the furniture pieces. We’re thinking about how the home will actually be lived in every day.

Because those are the moments a summer house is really for.

And if you don’t cook? Even better.

One of our favorite evenings last summer was our team celebration at our Cold Storage Beach project. We invited Chef Jillian Walraven to cook for us, started the evening early, opened the wine, and let her take it from there.

Jillian is a private chef here on the Cape and one of those people who just gets the way to host. Her menus are built around the season, sourcing from local farms.

We talked. We laughed. We drank wine - or Aperol Spritzes, depending on who you ask - and let Chef Jillian take care of dinner.

We spend so much of our lives waiting for the special occasion to use the special things. Summer on Cape Cod has a funny way of reminding you that this is the special occasion.

Of course, Angela would argue that setting the table deserves an entire journal of its own.

So that’s exactly what we’re doing next week and in the meantime - sharing some behind the scenes of our favorite summer memory.
