Lysa Flower · Don't Murder the Fun-ness

Okay here we go!

Issue N0. 001! See how many zeros I put in there? Yep, there’s expectation sneaking up on me already!… AND, speaking of sneaky peeks….

All last summer I hunted for a Vancouver studio. Total dead ends… ugh!

Mid November of 2025 I was Riso printing at @fluoropress. I happened to take a moment, looked around and said, “Wow, your studio has ah-may-ZING light.”

She responded saying: “Oh, I’m moving at the end of the month. You interested?”

I picked up the keys 🗝️ early that December of 2025. What?!! Could it really be that easy?

It was.

Now I have a physical studio right in the heart of Vancouver! It’s at the tippy-top of the iconic Triangle Building, in Mount Pleasant just below the face!

Yep. I know!

Here’s another photo of it from the side. Both the windows by the lightning bolt and the star are in my studio

This was the day I picked up the keys:

After a lot of cleaning and painting it now looks like this.

Did I go overboard?!

Yes. yes, I did! I mean how could I not! I also named it The Fun-ness Factory Studio! See what I did there with the Fun-ness thing *WINK

I also revamped my website (ugh! Twice but that’s another post!) and hooked up an online store! Which is where these bad boy shoes were purchased from! Get it. They’re the same print! Neat right?!

So there you go, the Universe reminding us (me) that when you relax and don’t murder the fun-ness, that’s when the magic happens… AND it’ll be even better than you expected!

I know. So annoying! But, also thank you universe! I love you 🥹

Hidden Potential by Adam Grant : I’ve read my lion’s share of books like these and this one did not disappoint. AND if you can’t read it just go out an buy yourself a game of Tetris. (If you read the book you’ll get the reference-wink!)

Mrs Van Gogh by Caroline Cauchi : Historical fiction that I’m devouring. Also, I always suspected Gaugin was a 💩! Ha, vindicated!

There There by Tommy Orange : Gifted to me by my brother-in-law last Christmas. It may be the BEST book I’ve ever read. It’s gorgeous how it all came together. I can’t wait to read his next book, Wandering Stars now!

I thought I was only fair if I did I the first WTF: interview. You know before asking other people to do it.

LYSA: 100% A strawberry shortcake! I LOVE strawberries!!! And yes, also Strawberry Shortcake because of the doll!

LYSA: Ha! Both! The building is for sale, which I’m assuming will take a while. I aim to be the last person to have this space. That way I can get around dealing with that pesky need to paint the floor a “normal” colour.

I remember someone saying once, ”what you show is what you grow”, and I’m super addicted to painting murals. So my thinking is I’ll show murals on my floor so the mural work will grow.

You got a wall or floor you need a mural on?!

LYSA: I have this sticker on my sketchbook. The sucker with vampire teeth sums it up nicely. The inner perfectionist critic seems so sweet in the beginning, and then wham! You’re bit by that little saboteur. Ugh! Such a jerk!

How would I deal with it? Realize what’s happening (hopefully before I get bit), then dump it in a glass of water… and melt that little sucker (*wink… see what I did there?! 😁)

It’s not that original but it works: Do one small thing everyday.

If you miss a day, just start again, no shame spirals okay. I get it, it’s hard and easy all the same time. I think the trick is to keep is small and easy. I started drawing a flower everyday and I’ve realized all those little drawing have started to add up…

Check out this video Chris Piascik (yup the sticker guy): 14 Years of Daily Drawing: What I Learned and What’s Next. He’s a pretty cool guy and you can grab his new book right here.

Or have a peek at Kate Bingaman-Burt’s work. She’s coming out with a book printed at her Zine Studio called Daily Purchase Drawings, 2006-2026. Yep she’s drawing everything she buys! have a L👀k see HERE
