Lynnette Van Epps-Smith · Lynnette’s Substack

I was attracted to this article on DrawingTogether with Wendy Substack today because it was about my favorite artist Eva Hesse. I saw her exhibition in San Francisco in the late 80’s-(I’d have to go find my flyer from the show). I loved it. She became one of my favorite artists. Unfortunately she died very young of a brain tumor, in her mid Thirties. Not only was she a woman artist but was one that had a real bent to fiber as a media.

I was going to San Jose State University at the time pursuing my long delayed college degree in Studio Arts. I had been artmaking most of my life but felt I needed some legitimacy, and the degree did lead me down some interesting avenues. One was greater appreciation for other artists’ work. My own, well, jury is still out on that. And as you will note in this letter to Eva, many artists think their work is crap-most of the time. It does take incredible courage to put yourself out there. Doubt is the constant shadow companion in the studio.

So today I ran across this great YouTube that has, oh my goodness , three of my favorite artists ( well Sol Witt not so much but I appreciate his standing in Art History). If I had had this lecture during Art School-I could have saved myself some money. Overall the Art School experience was well worth it! Since this video has some saucy artist language, I thought I would better share here! Enjoy!
