Can these bones live?

An invasion of illegal immigrants and rising violence on our streets; white working class boys increasingly discriminated against in education and work; indigenous fertility rates at an all-time low, with the number of deaths set to outstrip births every year from now on; 42% of marriages in England and Wales ending in divorce; 60% of cohabiting couples breaking up without marrying; 46% of teenagers not living with, or maybe never even having known, both natural/biological parents; an 800% rise in police recorded cases of rape since 2000. While as for the vitality of the nation’s religious life, though we have a growing number of around 2,000 mosques, last year an estimated 3.500 churches closed.

The list goes on and on. The truth is, Britain has become a graveyard for the putrefying remains of our once great nation and broken dreams. We have lost knowledge of who we are and, as things stand, we are doing nothing to stop the rot. But we have brought this on ourselves. By our own choices we have sown the seeds of destruction, and now we are reaping the harvest.

The rot began in the 1960s when we separated sex from procreation, making contraception available to both the married and unmarried, and allowing abortion virtually on demand. Promiscuity, without the need for commitment, became normalised, and industrial numbers of unborn babies were sacrificed on the altar of free love ... sexually transmitted diseases skyrocketed. Then we welcomed sex, not just between the unmarried, but between those of the same sex too. In the oft quoted words of American poet Eileen Myles, ‘Everybody’s queer!’

Fact: Since 1967, around 11 million babies have been aborted in England and Wales, 98% of which were for what are euphemistically termed ‘social reasons’ – which simply means, to be blunt, that they were unwanted.

Fact: The latest figures from Government estimate that around 13.1 million people currently living in the UK were born overseas. Which translates to about 19%, or a fifth, of the population.

For those of a religious turn of mind, the near equivalence of these numbers gives definite pause for thought. By our life-style choices and behaviour, we have rejected God and worshipped sin, and thereby we have brought the nation under judgment. The void left by the number of babies we have sacrificed has been filled by foreigners, many of whom, as we increasingly know to our cost, are hostile to our values and way of life: who hate all that we represent and whose long-term aim is to take control.

The question is, can these bones, even now, live? Can we yet regain our identity, and reclaim our culture, our heritage, and our land? There are many today who say, ‘No, we can’t. It’s simply too late!’ But let us not forget God, the Sovereign Lord of our nation, and His Son, Jesus Christ – who gave His life 2,000 years ago that we might live. With God all things are possible.

Christianity first came to our shores in around 40 A.D., brought here by Roman traders. A tiny – infinitesimal – seed, that, against all odds, took root and grew. So much so that only a few centuries later we were, to all intents and purposes, a Christian land. And from that time on we have been a jewel in the Lord’s hand. While we have kept faith – however imperfectly – He has protected and delivered us. From invasion, war, internal strife, pestilence and plague. Sometimes miraculously! In World War 2, for instance, as German forces swept through Europe, taking all in their course, tiny Britain, standing alone, looked to be on the point of annihilation. But seven times the King called the nation to pray, and seven times the Lord delivered us. And gave us victory.

Throughout our history, the Lord has been our strong defender and deliverer, and He will be the same again, if we will only repent and turn back to Him, and ask His help. But if we refuse and continue on our present course, He won’t … and horror lies ahead. The choice is simple.

Can these bones live? Yes, they can. But only if we repent and turn back to God, acknowledging Him as Lord and Sovereign of our nation.
