Mexico City has long been a sanctuary for me. Despite the energy of a city of more than 20 million people, it’s where I feel most at peace. It’s where I go when I’m burnt out, searching for inspiration, or simply looking to reset.
Since my first visit in 2018, I’ve returned as often as I can. That first trip turned into six weeks backpacking across Mexico with Mexico City as my home base. Even after countless visits, I leave each one with a longer list of places to explore and a stronger desire to return.
My visit in early June came at a time when I needed to step away from routine and reconnect with myself. After months of feeling drained by corporate life, I was craving that reset. I could have gone anywhere, but I found myself returning to the place I trust most to restore my sense of self.
Over the past year, Tepoztlán kept appearing on my radar. Recognized as one of Mexico's Pueblos Mágicos for its cultural heritage and natural beauty, it felt like the perfect complement to the energy of Mexico City. Midway through my week, I traded busy streets for towering cliffs, winding cobblestone roads, and a slower pace of life.
Although many people visit as a day trip from Mexico City, just 90 minutes from the city’s southern neighborhoods, I’d recommend staying at least two nights. The town reveals itself best when you aren’t rushing between attractions. Give yourself time to wander the markets, linger over long meals, and settle into the pace of life beneath the surrounding mountains.
Early June isn’t considered the ideal season to visit, as the rainy season is beginning, but I still found plenty of opportunities to enjoy the outdoors. Mornings were often cloudy, afternoon showers rolled through, and the skies usually cleared by evening. For the driest weather, plan a visit between March and May. If your schedule allows, come during the week. The weekend crowds disappear, the streets become noticeably quieter, and at times it felt like I had the town almost entirely to myself.
