The Lion’s Gate: More Than a New Age Buzzword

Every August the internet lights up with talk of the Lion’s Gate Portal. You’ll see promises of instant manifestation, cosmic downloads, and miraculous awakenings. I have to admit, I’ve always been a bit of a skeptic about the whole thing. It has often felt a little too “New Age” for my taste.

But here’s the interesting part for me. Underneath all the hype, there’s a genuine thread of ancient wisdom running through the “Lions Gate Portal” of August 8th, or yeah, 8-8.

The astrology, the astronomy, the Egyptian myths, the numerology, and even parts of the Christian mystical tradition all seem to weave together. Whether you see it as literal truth or simply a symbolic language, you cannot deny that something fascinating emerges when these traditions begin speaking to one another.

And even deeper is my increasing suspicion that our consciousness defines what is real and what is operational in this matrix. A collective western new age consensus that each year the date of August 8th matters, means it probably. does

As the Emerald Tablet refrain goes, As above, so below. As below, so it is above.

The Lion’s Gate isn’t really about the number 8.

It begins with Sirius.

Known as the Dog Star, Sirius is the brightest star visible in our night sky. Each year, depending on where you live on Earth, Sirius makes its heliacal rising—the first morning it becomes visible just before sunrise after having disappeared into the Sun’s glare.

For the ancient Egyptians, this marked the beginning of an entirely new cycle, a new year.

The appearance of Sirius announced the flooding of the Nile, the life-giving event that transformed barren land into fertile fields. Without those floods there was no harvest. Without harvest there was no civilization.

To the Egyptians, Sirius represented renewal, abundance and divine timing.

That’s a very different story than social media manifestation memes.

One reason this year’s astrology fascinates me is because asteroid Isis is incredibly active.

You can’t really separate Sirius from Isis, and honestly you can’t make this shit up either.

In Egyptian mythology, Isis is the great healer, the devoted wife and sister of Osiris, and the force that restores life after devastation. She gathers together what has been torn apart and makes it whole again.

That symbolism mirrors the Nile itself. Every year the river overflowed its banks. It looked chaotic. It looked destructive. Yet those very floods produced extraordinary fertility.

Sometimes what appears to be overwhelming is actually preparing the ground for new life. Perhaps that’s a message many of us need right now.

As we approached the Lions Gate, of all things on this Aquarius full moon, I became the flood. I spent 24 hours crying — it started with an acupuncture session to release somatic trauma, it cascaded into relationship crisis (Venus fallen in Virgo square Mars in Gemini) and it ended with a deep peace.

The point I am making here is that Isis — who sits with the Leo Sun and Jupiter on the eight, is poised to bring floods of all kinds — sure weather events can happen, but so can heart centered (lLeo) deluges of emotion. Use the energy of this time for release, a south node purge of what is not needed in your emotional life.

To make the Sky even more uncanny, asteroid Sphinx now travels with Uranus in Gemini. Uranus = shocking. Mars still in Gemini = uncover. Back in March, Italian researcher Filippo Biondi announced that satellite radar scans of the Giza Plateau appear to reveal a second Sphinx buried beneath a mound of hardened sand approximately 108 feet high.

This Lion’s Gate includes Mercury slipping into Leo the very next day. I expect news that involves one of two things: Egypt and war, and/or more about the hidden second sphinx.

Ironically, the Lion’s Gate is often presented as though Leo is the only important symbol.

But the deeper mythology belongs just as much to Sirius as it does to Leo.

Leo certainly matters.

This year Jupiter is travelling through Leo, amplifying themes of courage, generosity, creativity and heart-centered living. Leo reminds us to become brave enough to express who we really are.

In Tarot, this is beautifully represented by the Strength card.

Notice that the woman isn’t defeating the lion. She’s befriending it. She gently places her hand inside its mouth—not through force, but through trust.

I makes me ponder the nature of real strength — maybe it’s not about domination but something deeper. Maybe it’s conscious mastery over our own instinctive nature, while at the same time realizing we spirit playing in matter.

That’s a far more interesting lesson than simply wishing on a dog star for riches!

One of the most intriguing discoveries is that August 6—the two days preceding the Lion’s Gate—is celebrated as the Feast of the Transfiguration in the Eastern Orthodox Christian tradition.

This isn’t something people usually connect to astrology. Yet the symbolism is fascinationg.

Christ ascends the mountain with several disciples and suddenly becomes radiant. His face shines like the Sun. His garments become dazzling white. The disciples witness a profound initiation into a higher state of awareness.

Whether you interpret the story literally, psychologically or mystically isn’t really the point. It is a story about illumination. About consciousness expanding. About seeing reality differently than you did before.

That this sacred festival occurs immediately before the modern Lion’s Gate celebration feels deeply mysterious to me. Perhaps humanity has always recognized that early August carries a symbolic invitation toward spiritual awakening. After all, Leo is the sign of the heart - and many traditions recognize what is called the spiritual heart (not the normal heart chakra, but rather a portal to the timeless blissful nature of who we all really are.

The astrology itself is surprisingly encouraging.

One of my favourite aspects this week is the beautiful trine between the Sun in Leo and Saturn in Aries.

Saturn often gets a bad reputation. People think restriction. Delay. Hardship. But Saturn is also the architect. The builder. The backbone that allows inspiration to become reality.

The Sun represents purpose. Saturn represents structure. Together they ask a simple question:

What dream are you finally ready to build?

If you’ve been carrying a creative vision, a business idea, a spiritual practice or a long-held goal, this is the kind of sky that rewards commitment. This week’s sky does not promise instant manifestation. It supplies us with the courage, creativity and commitment to make something happen over — TIME.

That is the gift Saturn offers. Patient manifestation.

Whether or not you believe in portals isn’t actually the point. The heavens invite reflection every year. The Lion’s Gate simply gives us a symbolic language for that invitation.

So, why not look up before sunrise if Sirius is visible where you live.

Ask yourself what part of your life is ready for renewal.

What needs courage?

What deserves structure?

What wants to be brought fully into the light?

Perhaps that’s what this season has always been about. Not escaping reality.

But becoming brave enough to meet it with a stronger heart, a clearer purpose, and the steady confidence that even after the river floods, new life always grows.
