25 Really Nice Things for Your Home

I’m clinging onto Summer with all I’ve got but I’d be lying if I said Autumn wasn’t in sight, and Autumn means house proud hibernation season. Our home over the summer becomes a dumping ground for suitcases, half-empty weekend bags and endless white washes and piles of ‘I’ll get to that later’. It’s been crazy hot this summer so all those big sorting out jobs and heavy lifting have been pushed to the back of the to-do list while we retreat to the coolest room of the house with a fan. When it’s 30 degrees and airless in our Victorian terrace, my capacity for household chores drops by about 99.9%. I assemble rather than cook meals, we keep the curtains drawn to keep the room as cool as possible and generally spend far less time enjoying the inside of our home.

So September’s cooler climate and ‘Back to Work’ attitude is most definitely needed to propel me into getting our house back into order on every level. More time pottering, rearranging and sorting, means a renewed focus on all things home, the nice things as well as the needed things. By sorting out all my summer clutter, it feels like all the beautiful and joyful things finally get their time in the proverbial sun again. My attention shifts from backless tops and toe rings to small paintings and pleasing little knick knacks that make me smile. There’s truly no better way to mourn the end of summer than to lean into making your inside space as joyful as that little Greek beach you’re dreaming about until next summer.
