I was talking to a client today, and they were feeling a lot.
Pain, loss, sadness, anger.
BIG, grand feelings. Feelings big enough to blot out the sun.
They thought they’d be gobbled up.
I’ve been there, waves of emotion crashing, taking sips of air, reaching out for anything to hold onto. Wondering, “Will this ever let up?”
When you feel big emotions, the impulse is to understand them, solve them, or sweep them under the rug.
“There must be a problem if I feel this way.” This makes an enemy of your experience.
Emotions are evidence of being alive. And life doesn’t want to be hemmed in. Life wants room to climb towards the light of living.
I could hear their heavy breathing and feel their swirling feelings.
I invited them to take a breath with me.
Then I said:
“Feel the vastness of the pain, the loss, the sadness, the anger, and realize that to hold something so vast, you must be even bigger.”
They let out a big laugh, and we both smiled.
Looks like they had room for another feeling: Joy.
Warmly,
Lucas
