On Saturday night in Las Vegas, Nevada, surging prospect Quillan Salkilld scored not only the most meaningful win of his burgeoning career when he submitted lightweight division stalwart Mateusz Gamrot inside of a round. The manner in which he dispatched such a proven veteran and highly-adept grappler was nothing short of sensational. It is legitimately one of the best prospect-turned-contender victorious I’ve seen in what feels like quite a while.
In this video, I recap the fight, offer up historical examples of similar victories to see how it compares, discuss the emergent class of 20-something lightweights and much more.
Make no mistake: I don’t know how far Salkilld will ultimately go, but he turned in the kind of performance that those who make huge impacts on the game do.
