With the news today that Sens. John Cornyn of Texas and Thom Tillis of North Carolina are clearing the way in the Senate Judiciary Committee to approve Donald Trump’s former personal attorney Todd Blanche as U.S. Attorney General, I felt it important to take a trip down memory lane.
Two weeks ago, I was on CNN to discuss whether or not Cornyn and Tillis - two GOP Senators who had their political careers ended by Trump - would actually stand up to him and deny Blanche’s nomination from proceeding. As you’ll hear me argue in this clip, I didn’t buy that they ever would and list my reasons for saying as much.
Sure enough, that’s precisely what happened.
My prediction isn’t especially interesting or that hard to make. What is true, however, is that today is election day in contested Democratic primaries all over the country. Which fighters we send to battle this kind of rot and public contempt matters more now than ever.
Cornyn and Tillis had literally nothing left to lose and still rolled over for Trump. This is not a movement that can negotiated with or used for bipartisan consensus; they can only be defeated. Let’s make sure we’re offering up the right kind of fighters to combat this menace of a political project.
