The 8 Shopify Apps I Recommend to Almost Every Client

One of the biggest advantages of Shopify is its ecosystem of apps.

With thousands of tools available, you can extend your store far beyond what Shopify provides out of the box.

The problem?
Most merchants install too many apps, slow their store down, and end up paying for tools they don’t actually need.

After years working with Shopify stores, I’ve seen the same pattern: a small handful of apps consistently drive the most value.

Below are 8 Shopify apps I regularly recommend to clients.

Install

Search & Discovery is Shopify’s own free app designed to improve your store’s product filters, recommendations, and merchandising controls.

With the app you can:

  • Add advanced filters (size, colour, material etc.)

  • Create product recommendations

  • Set synonyms for search terms

  • Control how products appear in search results

In my experience, the biggest value from this app comes from its filtering and product recommendation features.

While it does include search functionality, Shopify’s native search is still fairly basic. For stores that rely heavily on search (especially those with larger catalogues), I usually recommend installing a dedicated search app, which I’ll mention later in this list.

However, when it comes to collection filters and product recommendations, this app is excellent - and considering it’s free, it’s something I recommend almost every Shopify store installs.

Analytics tools can tell you what customers are doing on your site, but they rarely tell you why.

That’s where Census becomes incredibly valuable.

Census allows you to run on-site and post-purchase surveys, giving you the ability to ask customers direct questions about their experience.

For example, you can ask things like:

  • How did you hear about us?

  • Did you have any issues using the website?

  • What nearly stopped you from purchasing?

  • Is there anything we could improve about the site?

While many merchants use surveys primarily for marketing attribution, I personally find Census most useful for improving the overall customer experience.

It allows you to gather real feedback about your store - whether that’s confusing navigation, issues during checkout, or things customers wish the site did better.

Over time, these insights can highlight patterns and help you make data-backed improvements to your website, rather than guessing what might improve conversions.

Install

Shopify Flow is one of the most powerful free tools Shopify offers (and a personal favourite)!

It allows you to create automated workflows based on triggers and conditions inside your store.

For example:

  • Tag high-value customers automatically

  • Send internal alerts when large orders come in

  • Cancel suspicious high-risk orders

  • Automatically tag customers based on purchase behaviour

Instead of doing repetitive admin tasks manually, Flow lets Shopify handle them automatically.

For growing stores especially, automation becomes incredibly valuable as order volume increases.

Reviews are one of the most important conversion drivers for ecommerce.

If customers land on a product page and see no reviews, hesitation immediately increases. Reviews provide social proof, build trust, and help shoppers feel confident about purchasing.

That’s where Judge.me comes in.

Judge.me allows you to collect and display unlimited product reviews, including photo and video reviews from customers. It can automatically send review requests after orders are delivered and display reviews throughout your store using widgets and badges.

The free plan alone includes features most apps charge for, including:

  • Unlimited product reviews

  • Photo and video reviews

  • Automated review request emails

  • Review widgets and star ratings

  • Google rich snippets for SEO

For most small and mid-sized stores, the free version is more than enough (but even the paid version is only $15pcm regardless of size!)

Most Shopify merchants rely on analytics tools that show numbers.

Clarity shows behaviour.

Microsoft Clarity provides:

  • Heatmaps

  • Session recordings

  • User behaviour insights

  • Drop-off analysis

This allows you to literally watch how customers navigate your store, where they get stuck, and where they abandon the purchase journey.

It helps you identify things like:

  • Broken UX

  • Confusing layouts

  • Checkout friction

  • Elements customers ignore

Clarity uses AI-driven insights and session recordings to reveal how visitors interact with your store and where they drop off in the buying journey.

And the best part?

It’s completely free.

Managing collection sorting manually becomes impossible as your catalogue grows.

Sortwise automatically reorders products within collections based on performance and inventory signals.

For example, you can automatically push:

  • Best-selling products to the top

  • Out-of-stock products to the bottom

  • New arrivals higher in collections

  • Low-converting products lower

This means your collections constantly showcase the products most likely to convert.

Merchandising is one of the most underrated levers for increasing conversion rate.

While Shopify’s native search tools are improving, larger stores often need something more powerful.

Searchanise replaces your standard search with predictive instant search and advanced filtering so customers can quickly discover relevant products.

Key features include:

  • AI-powered instant search

  • Advanced product filters

  • Merchandising tools

  • Search analytics

  • Product recommendations

Stores with larger catalogues often see significant improvements in search conversions once they upgrade their search experience.

Install

Your cart page is one of the most overlooked conversion opportunities in ecommerce.

UpCart replaces Shopify’s default cart with a customisable slide cart designed to increase average order value.

You can add features like:

  • Upsells and cross-sells

  • Free shipping progress bars

  • Product recommendations

  • Cart announcements

  • Bundle suggestions

Instead of sending customers to a basic cart page, UpCart turns the cart into a mini sales funnel.

For many stores, even a small increase in AOV makes the app pay for itself very quickly.

The Shopify app ecosystem is incredibly powerful, but installing too many apps can create unnecessary complexity.

If you’re building or optimising a store, start with these four:

  • Judge.me

  • Search & Discovery

  • Shopify Flow

  • Microsoft Clarity

Then, once your store begins scaling, consider adding tools like:

  • UpCart

  • Sortwise

  • Searchanise

  • Census

Installed together, these apps help improve trust, discoverability, automation, analytics, and revenue - without overwhelming your tech stack.
