have been sitting on this for a little over a week and, as always, am trying to be real with my practice of making space for this and trying to not let the perfect and complete be the enemy of the good!
there’s so many things i wanna say about this political moment and this economic moment (neither of which i think are ending any time soon) and this AI moment. but the number of things people in my community are offering and wanting the word spread for is HUGE and so i wanna just get right into that. diving in now!
(actually, quick side note: because i had intended to get this edition out in late april, a few things are already out of date. definitely my bad there and apologies to anyone who sent me something that’s already happened! 🫣)
first up, my friend sarah’s new book is about to come out and her partner, my dear friend dave, wrote a sweet message to help promote it. check it out and pre-order a copy (even if it’s not your thing, you can pre-order it and gift it to someone who you think would enjoy it!).
This June, my beloved Sarah’s newest labor of brilliance--A Second Sight: How the Wonder and Vision of Black Mediamakers Push America Toward Freedom--will be published “for the sophisticated general audience” (that’s you and me!) by Harper Collins.
The more of you who purchase a copy, the sooner I can retire! Just kidding, but seriously, I’ve read snippets and I’m thrilled about the contribution Sarah’s making to rethinking media history and the struggle for racial justice.
If you are so inclined, you can pre-order the book from our preferred retailer Bookshop.org, or from another retailer linked on the publishers page.
Much love,
DaveP.s. Book tour dates are in the works in Philly, Boston, DC, Chicago, New York and more...if you want to attend one in your city let me know and I’ll make sure you get the details.
next up, two friends are offering a virtual 8-week somatics workshop that looks DOPE. i am v sad i can’t take it but i’m very excited to spread the word about it!
another deary, rafter, is offering a second iteration a four-week morning prayer series. my fav part of the description of the offering: “This is prayer practice for the spiritually feral. No belief system required - just willingness to take a relational stance toward vastness and mystery.” prayer might not be your thing (hell, you might not ever have even prayed before) but if gathering with others who prioritize orienting to the sacred would feel nice, check it out.
a beloved friend and co-facilitator friend, yoojin, is offering a 2-day nonviolent communication training and it looks amazing. yoojin describes NVC as a “practice that has increased my capacity to truly see and hold every single person (no matter how egregious their behavior) as a fellow human being.” another thing i wish i could do and just can’t because there’s too many things! details over here.
a friend and close collaborator is offering a 3-part grief workshop series and the first one is tomorrow. Together We Grieve: A 3-Event Journey Towards Living More Fully | Saturday, 5/9, 4 - 6pm, Somerville | Saturday, 5/16, 2 - 5pm, Central Square | Monday, 5/25, 6 - 9pm, Jamaica Plain. whether you’re new to grief or swim deep in those waters, i know this series will be worth touching into if you can.
yeshi neumann, one of my rockwood co-trainer beloveds and the first person i ever trained with at rockwood, is closely connected to Yogi Sri Ammani and she is coming to the bay area this may and june. yeshi is tryna get the word out and so here i am, sharing. if you’re a yogi or just someone looking to be connected to someone who is/has been on their lineage path, def worth giving it a look. her story is simple and powerful and beautiful. thanks, yeshi!
and last but not least, i wanted to shout out my friend, nay’s, massage work! here’s the review i just posted on google this morning:
just... wow! nay offered my partner and i a custom couples massage workshop and holy wow was it awesome. we started off with a few solid questions to get clear about what and where to focus for the session and then we got right into it. the first thing we did was them teaching us how to be with each other’s body and it just went uphill from there. the care they showed both of us and the way they showed us how to care for (which sometimes looks like an elbow to the hamstring!) each other was next level. have recommended them to at least 3 couples since we did it and will continue doing so. two thumbs way way up.
ok, and now a few quicker things:
Meta creating AI version of Mark Zuckerberg so staff can talk to the boss - LOL what could POSSIBLY go wrong. sidenote: if zuck AIs himself out of his own job, i think i might start using AI out of spite
shoutout to an old work collaborator, lisa cowen, for showing me the international surf therapy org! the group doesn’t seem particularly active but i’ll be keeping my eye on them!
two powerful podcasts about ending interpersonal violence and building transformative and restorative justice capacity in our social change work:
this two part series from movement memos: (1) Rupture and Repair Under Fascist Conditions and (2) Repair Is a Survival Skill Under Fascism
