If you’ve been following the saga of community radio in St. Louis, there’s a pretty good chance you know the Royale, a bar and restaurant that has been hosting numerous benefits and get-togethers and celebratory spins featuring so many of the former KDHX (RIP) and current CRSTL.FM DJs. We love hanging out there and sharing music, food, and libations with friends new and old.
On June 20th, CRSTL.FM DJs Rich Reese, John Wendland, and Dr. Jeff will welcome the summer solstice with a 6+ hour spin out on the patio (or inside if it rains, which it won’t!). Expect classic radio hits and great tunes all in the spirit of the summer.
This is the third annual summer solstice spin, so come on out, meet the DJs of CRSTL.FM, and sip the coolest drinks in town at the Royale with us.

My first encounter with The Queen Diva was at Bonnaroo – 2011. Or so I believe. The details have escaped the internet record, because it was a late-night tent performance. Having never heard bounce music, I honestly thought the echoes reverberating from Centeroo came from someone playing a janky CD in the campgrounds with zero regard that their disc kept skipping…until my friends came roaring back to our campsite with excitement at the surprise set they stumbled upon - a stage covered in randos shaking their butts to some ratchet beats at the behest of a fabulously androgynous singer commanding them to wobble alongside a handful of professional dancers.
My FOMO was relieved when Big Freedia came to St. Louis soon after to promote her first release - Big Freedia Hitz, Vol. 1. I quickly learned the sheer joy of self-expression that she brings to each life-giving show, and I have since taken every opportunity to soak up all the Big Diva Energy fate puts in my path: at the Howard Theatre in 2014 (Our friend got onstage! We got to meet Flash!), Delmar Hall with Low Cut Connie, The Pageant with Boyfriend, The Ready Room, Grove Fest, in the Krewe of Freret during Mardi Gras… and while I wasn’t there personally, I can feel the BDE in my vinyl copy of Big Freedia with The Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra.
The ascension of Big Freedia from New Orleans native Freddie Ross, Jr. to international icon of a genre was chronicled in the reality show, Big Freedia: Queen of Bounce. Her guiding philosophy of ‘keep on grinding, keep on shining’ while growing up as a gay gospel singer is further documented in her autobiography, God Save the Queen Diva, which brought a light to my life when it was gifted to me during Covid times, as did her casual Sunday brunch cooking shows. Even though many of us were quarantining, she still found a way to reach us with love, inspiration, and artistry.
You can get “Dangerous” with the Queen of “N.O. Bounce” at Music at the Intersection on Saturday, July 18. With any luck, she will “Throw It Back” to the old “Azz Everywhere” days just as much as she’s Pressing Onward with her new “Holy Shuffle” material, bringing acceptance and “Celebration” to an audience eager to “Lift Dat Leg Up” in their “Sunday Best” and “Explode” the confines of outdated social categories.

We’d like to thank all who attended the benefit and braved the rain early on. There were some who were there, start to finish.
Donner Party String Band started off the day playing acoustically inside for their set due to the rain. We were wondering if this was the way it would be for the day, but the rain quit and the Gasconade River Band were able to take the stage outside. Slowly the clouds went away and it turned out to be a beautiful day.
Our friends, Sadie Hawkins String Band were next, followed by a relatively new band Purple Highway from around Louisiana, MO, playing country and Americana. They had a warm response from the audience. Up next Mel & Emery Besher, a father & son, who played as a duo. Mel has written Grammy-nominated songs for some big country & bluegrass artists, and his son Emery is following in his fathers footsteps.
Next the Mound City Slickers played some bluegrass & old timey music, with CRSTL.FM’s own, Keith Dudding of the show Shady Grove on guitar & vocals. We want to thank Fred Gumaer for lining up Fiddlin’ Sam and Cowboy Ryan, who played some country & western swing. Joined by Fred Gumaer of The Midday Jamboree on guitar & vocals on a couple of songs.
Barnum Jack closed the day with some hard-driving originals & a few covers of their style of bluegrass. We can’t thank all the bands enough for being part of this event and donating their time & talent. We’d like to thank the two 50/50 raffle ticket winners for donating their winnings back to CRSTL, and thanks to Dog Town Records for the great sound. Also, we are grateful to all of our great volunteers who helped make this a success. We couldn’t do it without all of them.

The St. Louis punk and alternative music is bursting at the seams lately, and Petty Grievances, The Meowzas, Candylion, and Jeffy and the Sunken Heads all graced us in June with stellar albums. And 2 ‘zines, The Brock Street Burner and Punk Dumpster ‘Zine have begun to fill the RFT sized hole in our 314 hearts.
Petty Grievances started the release season with a sweaty, frantic “Petty Party” romp at Heavy Anchor on June 5th. Openers Breakmouth Annie were rock solid as always with their earnest Midwest punk sound that always reminds me of REM meets Husker Du, and Bruiser Queen was on fire with a careening set of favorites plus a few new tracks fueled by the recent addition of Ryan Hunter on bass. Both bands themselves are working on new albums, but, it was Petty Grievances who had the new album to debut. And what a debut they delivered, playing “Petty Party” cover to cover in a room so full and hyped that the air conditioners couldn’t keep up. Lead singer Scott Randall went through two shirts before finally giving up, mugging for the crowd with each wardrobe change, and busting out the full belly experience. It was a brilliant punk show with touches of PiL and Talking Heads to spice up the sound.
Twenty-three hours later, on June 6th, The Meowzas headlined the CRSTL Fundraiser with an album release of their own again at Heavy Anchor. It was a stacked bill with Jason Detroit, I Like Snaps, The Jits, The Stars Go Out opening. Jason Detroit did an earnest acoustic set, and his heartfelt tribute and eulogy to the late Matt Klouse was a particularly touching moment. (Jason said he plans to record it with one of his many project bands, Ben Diesel.) I Like Snaps delivered with their upbeat pop-punk sound that had people bouncing, and then The Jits brought their classic American bar sound with guitar solos and harmonica… and the question “Jeets or Jits?” Between sets, CRSTL DJ’s Stryker and Sean delighted the crowd with cowboy hat flipping, and then The Stars Go Out brought out their signature straight up, driving punk sound. Topping off the night was the bittersweet album release and final show of The Meowzas. Lead Singer Dorothy Pino’s move from St. Louis to Las Vegas led to the band’s eventual demise, but they leave behind a legacy with their album “Twist Top Sauvignon Blanc”. Ostensibly a cat themed pop-alternative band, their songs are a fun, furry bop, and highlighted by the fiery, claws out “Childless Cat Ladies”. One can only hope for a reunion here and there when the whole crew is back in town. (A HUGE THANKS to DJ Mike James (aka DJ Dopeamine) for spearheading the fundraising event, and to the Meowzas and Heavy Anchor and everyone who helped make this fundraiser a success!)
Sadly, on Saturday the 13th, ol Moe missed the CRSTL bluegrass fundraiser that happened at the Point Labaddie Brewery. Poor me had out of town obligations all week that messed up my plans to have a three venue Saturday. But, by all reports, the music was terrific. Fortunately, your reporter shook off the travellin’ blues just in time to wake up, shower, and speed all the way to 31Art Gallery’s Summerfest.
Candylion headlined the event with the release of their new album “Already Dead”. 31Art Gallery is the passion of Jared Minnick whose marriage of pop-art and punk on real instruments has been featured at RiotFest and the Las Vegas Punk Rock museum. The Gallery features of a multitude of artists including Maxine Thirteen, Old Bones Inc (Andy Dykeman and Mark Regester), Lost and Found Inc (Katie Chilman), and the photography of Emily Moore. And their punk rock launch events have been making a scene for a few years now.
Al Swacker and the legendary crew of Devil Baby Freakshow started the evening with their unique punk-a-billy sound including spunky originals and a Devo cover here and here, and then Sewer Urchin brought their supercharged thrash metal sounds raining down with a blistering set of outrage and humor with songs like “Godzilla vs. the Financial Sector”. Then headliners, Candylion launched into their new album. The three piece geek-punk band floats between Weezer, Melvins, and The Toadies, with plaintive, urgent vocals and a crunchy bottom heavy sound that delights your lo-fi senses. And their songs like “All Pets Die” are both poignant and profane.
In addition to the art on the walls and in everyone’s ears, two area zine’s were featured at the event. Paul and Michelle (Candylion’s bassist) had copies of their amazing little St. Zine called “The Brock Street Burner”. Each monthly color issue is a little taste of art, culture, music calendar, and word snark to brighten your 314 life. You could fill a whole month with tidy, curated recommendations inside. Tony Dovi’s Punk Dumpster ‘Zine is black and white throwback that focuses on the Punk Scene from St. Louis to Madison. Currently at issue 4, each one is over ¼” thick and chock full of interviews, opinion pieces, record reviews, cartoons, and scene photos that harken back to the days of typed and taped zines copied on the mailroom Xerox after the boss left.
But, just as soon as Candylion finished, half the crowd zipped from 31Art Gallery to Heavy Anchor for the Jeffy and the Sunken Heads album release. Those who skipped Candylion were treated to the mysterious pre-opener band “Satan Wizard”. Poor me missed them, but ol Moe was assured by CRSTL peers Ken, bobEE, and the two Riches that their socks had been blown off by a hair metal show the likes of which we may never see again. (Please, let us see them again!) After that, Call Letters traded vocals every other song with their snappy punk sound that is somewhere between classic Riot Grrrl and the bop of Shonen Knife.
And then, finally, it was time for the final album release of the weekend. Jeffy & the Sunken Heads rounded out this scribes’ A-Z run with a hilarious set of the tightest goofball punk songs you’ve ever heard. Their new album “Get Sunk” contains 25 songs and only one is over 2 minutes. Highlights include “McBob is a Left Lane Cruiser”, “Atari Your So Neat”, “Barf Cars From Mars”, “Record Cretin”, and the dance craze that took over the Heavy Anchor that night “Do The Donkey”. By the time Gerry, The Ayohtolla of RockNRolla, blew the last note on his trusty trombone, the crowd was smiling, exhausted, and totally donkey kicked out.
All in all, it was an amazing set of shows over two weekends that highlighted the best of St. Louis’ Punk and Alternative scene. Now, if you excuse me, I have to find a place for all my merch before the wife figures out how much I spent!

July 16-July 19 MATI. Music at the Intersection, now known as MATI, takes place in July this year in the Grand Center Arts District. A hundred performers across 15 stages.
