They leave Belfast in the morning, stop at the Giant’s Causeway for an hour, take a photograph at Carrick-a-Rede, and are back in their hotel by dinner. It is a perfectly reasonable way to see the highlights, and it also means missing almost everything that makes this coastline worth crossing an ocean for.

The Causeway Coast is not one attraction. It is roughly a hundred and twenty miles of coast road, glens, fishing villages and ruined castles, laid down over the course of Irish and Ulster history from the Normans to the Plantation to the Troubles and back again. Rushing it means treating a week’s worth of country as a photo stop. Taking it slowly means something closer to what people who live there experience: mornings with no schedule, afternoons spent at one castle rather than four, and evenings in small towns where nobody is selling you anything.

It runs from Belfast up through Carrickfergus, along the coast road through the Glens of Antrim, out to Carrick-a-Rede and the Giant’s Causeway, past Dunluce Castle and through Bushmills, and finally down to Derry, the only completely walled city left in Ireland. It goes in one direction. No stop requires you to double back on the one before it, which matters more than it sounds like it should when you are trying to actually rest on holiday rather than manage a schedule.
