Dear Ireland,

At Dunquin, a pier zig-zags down the cliff to water so blue it looks borrowed from somewhere warmer, the Blasket Islands drifting just offshore. When the island was finally evacuated in 1953, an entire literary world went quiet with it, its writers having captured a way of life on the edge of Europe just before it vanished forever.
