Is chilling email speak any less upsetting if it’s delivered as a mildly hyperpop chopped and screwed miniature club track? Kinda, yeah. In the video for ‘As Per My Last Email’, Brooklyn based sound designer and TV and film scorer Gisela Fullà-Silvestre presents her personal pop moniker as the NOKIA logo minus the K. The track is then filled with all the horrible sayings that come with horrible office jobs: “If we could take this offline.” “I will get my ducks in a row.” “Boots on the ground.” NOIA spares us the most pass-agg email opener of all (“a gentle reminder”), and ‘As Per My Last Email’ briefly becomes a bit of lost 90s euphoric house. Its statement is very clear and intentional though – we’re too professionally in touch, too permanently ‘on’. “I’m available all night all day every day,” she half laments and half brags. She is knackered. The below track is easily embedded in an email, should you need it.
The first two minutes of the seventeenth album in thirty-three years by Lambchop sway in the breeze as gently as a Southern porch swing. Banjo and acoustic guitar establish a patient, unassuming melody. A quiet choir, alternately humming and ba-ba-ing, joins underneath. Forty seconds later, the rich baritone of Kurt Wagner, Lambchop’s only permanent member for that third of a century, arrives at the mic, gnomic and droll and shyly self-effacing, instantly familiar with welcoming warmth. The Wikipedia page for New York duo Telepathe still speaks of them in the present tense, like they’ve not split up. Like their last album (Destroyer - only their second LP) wasn’t released in 2015. It’s been close to that since the last albums from Rhianna and Frank Ocean, to be fair, but where those cultural icons have kept themselves in the public eye Busy Gangnes and Melissa Livaudais all but vanished, you could say, even before Destroyer was released. Cameron Winter – Live At Carnegie Hall (Partisan, Oct 9): King goose Winter’s actually legendary set at Carnegie Hall (the youngest person to play a solo show at the venue – just him and a piano), is getting a vinyl release, as it probably should.
Fontaines DC – Dopamine Chamber (XL, Oct 16): No, Fontaines, you can NOT have a sizeable break! From the sound of new track ‘Marianne’, the band’s 5th album in 7 years is where you might expect it to be after 2024’s Romance: morphing into peak Depeche Mode territory. Happily, it looks like the dress up of that previous album has stuck around too. More big handsome bands should be in devil horns and tiaras as they announce new records.
Pulp have announce that their new live film What Do You Do For An Encore? will stream on Mubi from September 25.
London band Sorry are getting ruder, if you can believe it. They’ve been getting more and more sex obsessed for a while, but their new surprise track is called ‘Tom Will Slap Your Ass’, although it’s definitely delivered ‘arse’, as it should be. The video is a load of arses being slapped. In slow motion. Rude as hell. Willing to discuss with others.
My New Band Believe – the new solo project from Black Midi member Cameron Picton – has announced a limited edition ‘Numerology’ remixes 12” that will be available to buy exclusively at his live dates this autumn. ‘Numerology’ was the track released just before the project’s self-titled debut album earlier this year, that in fact doesn’t feature on the record (and actually sounds pretty different to the baroque acoustic feel of that release). This 12” edition of it features the original song and 2 remixes, both of which were made available digitally this week week. Here and here. But if you want the physical, you need to get to a show.
