Which means that it is not, in fact, “hot like Chipotle,” because chipotles are dried jalapeños, and god knows it’s humid out there. It’s hot like a fully hydrated, wet jalapeño.
Not that “hot like Chipotle” is a saying. I just thought this was a clever little quip. Please clap.
I have officially finished my first semester of grad school (please clap again) and am ready to languish in my bed with three AC units pointed directly at my face until school starts again. I had an absolute blast—obviously, because I am the kind of tightly wrapped, type-A person for whom the stressors of academia feel like a nice big hug.
I managed to keep my grades up this first semester, but I’m still waiting on that Pulitzer. It goes to the graduate student with the highest GPA, right?
It’s that time again! A new AudioFlux Circuit! Deadline 8/31!
For Team Audio Flux Circuit 08: Confection, we welcome bite-sized audio stories about unexpected conversations, close-to-home discoveries, and the people who quietly shape our lives. And dessert.
Circuit 08 brings together three remarkable partners: award-winning chocolatier Kate Shaffer of Ragged Coast Chocolates in Westbrook, Maine; Transom, whose The Listeners project champions audio stories about ordinary lives that are grounded in place and told with depth and artistry; and media sponsor Maine Public, a longtime supporter of powerful stories rooted in the everyday lives of Maine people.
Additional support for Circuit 08 is provided by the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies.
Together, our partners are drawn to what’s right in our midst: ingredients, neighbors, history, communities—and the surprising stories that emerge from them. Audio Flux Circuit 08 is going local.

Tonight’s Theme
SERENDIPITY: Prepare a five-minute story about the time an accident felt like fate. A wrong turn lands you at your new best friend’s doorstep. The botched job interview that led you to your true calling. Losing your wallet — only for it to be found by a long-lost cousin. Coffee spilled on the shirt of your future soulmate. Happy accidents. Meet-cutes. Windfalls. Fortuitous flukes. Is it magic? Is it kismet? No…it’s pure serendipity.

Podcast- and radio-makers fear dead air. This class is a guide to elevating the beauty and curiosity of ambient and field sounds into your mix. Instructor and radio artist Joan Schuman will help you consider how to tell a chunk of your story beyond voice, through stereo panning and pushing sound to the front while the voice falls further back for longer than a few seconds. Joan will teach you to move beyond the pre-sets and to experiment with effectively altering sound to offer a deeper feeling or understanding to listeners, building depth without confusing them. Found sound and field recordings will be focused on beyond online libraries as it gets us to listen more fully, both for the radio-maker and audience.
This is a two-part workshop where students will receive feedback on their work. Be prepared to arrive with a work-in-progress, idea or scene you want to experiment with and complete by the end of the second class.

Creativity is a fundamental quality and skill in our work. We know we need to take creativity seriously, yet the only way we can do that is by accessing our essential playfulness.
In this 3-part group coaching program, we explore the question, ‘How can I bring more creativity to my work?’
You will join a supportive group of like-minded audio practitioners to create a safe, non-judgmental space. We will work with a range of exercises and tools to encourage self-awareness and elicit creativity. You will be invited to be curious, to explore, and challenge yourself and one another in ways that support taking your learning and insights forward.
This is an invitation to enrich your audio practice and gift yourself the time and space to allow your creativity to bloom through the summer months. Rather than giving advice or teaching, coaching is grounded in presence, deep listening, and powerful questioning.
📅/⏰ Session 1: Aug 12, 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM PST: Focuses on your relationship with your creativity.
Session 2: Sep 16, 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM PST: We take the exploration further, developing greater awareness and discovering new ways of enhancing creativity in our work.
Session 3: Oct 14, 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM PST: We will integrate all we have experienced and learned through the summer of creative inquiry, and define the next steps to sustain more creativity in your work.

These days, it seems like everyone and their mother hosts an interview show. While making one may seem simple, creating one that will grab people’s attention (in an ever-changing podcast industry) can often be tremendously challenging. In this two-part workshop, award-winning showrunner, producer, and consultant John Asante will teach you how to develop and pitch your podcast idea, create a structure and format, form sustainable production methods, and produce a show that will keep your listeners coming back for more.

Successful audience growth isn’t about reaching everyone; it’s about finding the right, most engaged members of your community.
But the amount of data out there can be mind-boggling — within all the reports on impressions and conversion rates, what should you actually be looking for? And what platforms should you use to get that data?
This workshop, led by executive podcast strategist Christabel Nsiah-Buadi, will empower you to identify the data you already have and will walk you through important qualitative and quantitative data to look for and how to leverage both to sharpen your editorial strategy. She’ll also talk about the tools you need to learn more about your audience and dive deep into essential metrics for engagement: Downloads/Streams, Engaged Listeners, Followers, and Listener Countries. Finally, she’ll help you plot your next move for growth.

Good social media strategy looks different for a bakery, a political podcast, and a vintage electronics restorer — but the underlying principles are the same.
Andrew Parsons turned @nostalgic_nooks_bk into a full-time business by doing one thing well: making people genuinely care about vintage televisions converted into cat beds. In this class, he’ll walk you through the strategy behind building a loyal audience in any niche — content development, platform mechanics, and the part everyone wants to get to: monetization. We’ll cover brand partnerships, what sponsors are actually looking for, and how to position yourself for deals that work for your audience and your business.
Come with your account handle and a rough sense of what you want your account to be.

Like dreams that blur the line between “real-life” and another kind of consciousness, this workshop is an invitation to listen more fully.
In this two-part course, you will use material from dreams to guide the listener’s ears around metaphor, abstract image, or even as translated scripts to create small but elaborate audio gems. We’ll leave aside concerns about impartiality and truth-telling in order to explore adventurous sound design and story-making.
We’ll listen to dream-related sonic works for a sense of approach, to imagine who might be listening, and to see how abstract or semi-fictional scenes can augment a linear story. Between sessions, you will mix your ideas into a short scene (five minutes or less). In the second session, we’ll closely listen as a group and offer feedback.
You should plan to arrive with recorded material, such as voiced dream recollections of your own or others; metaphoric sounds; or a theme to explore based on a remembered phrase or word.
